Chest and back pain, breathing restrictions (long, but please advise..)

Ok so I'm in quite a bit of pain here and I don't know whether I'm supposed to leave it until I can get a GP appointment or what..?

Basically I (as usual) started feeling very sick last night and threw up my dinner, but none of it had digested so it all came up in one big lump and it HURT. It was BURNING for hours afterwards and it felt like a lump was stuck. I assumed, ok so it must be heartburn/reflux or something.. After glugging tons of Gaviscon (which made it hurt still, as does swallowing anything) I tried Zantac and it did nothing either so I didn't get a lot of sleep. Today I have been still glugging Gaviscon but it doesn't seem to be doing anything. Once again, just assuming it's the dreaded pregnancy heartburn.

Now though, my chest hurts. It's coming in waves, and it feels like my breathing is restricted somewhat. It also feels like my chest is "sore" inbetween these waves of pain - the only way I can try to describe it is like kind of sore when you have had a really bad chesty cough and your chest feels almost raw? But when these waves come they go round into my back as well as across my chest. I tried undoing my bra (I have a rather large heavy chest!) to see if that was restricting me, but it's doing nothing.

I've had gastritis before, and I've got a feeling it may be this, but then again it may just be a normal pregnancy thing and was hoping someone could shed some light on it? I don't want to bug the out-of-hours services if it's just what heartburn in pregnancy feels like..

Additions: No fever (according to thermometer), and no allergies to anything I've taken.

Yet more Zantac has relieved it slightly so I am going to see how it goes tonight and if needs be make an out-of-hours appointment tomorrow, or wait 'til it's open fully again on Tuesday and see if I can get a same-day urgent appointment (I'll have to beg..) as it's still bearable at the moment. I just didn't want to waste anyone's time today if it's only heartburn haha. Thanks x

it sounds like you have irritated it when you have been sick, so it probably is raw! i dont think it sounds like heartburn, i definately think it has more to do with when you were throwing up. it will probably just take time to heal. but obviously you should get it checked out if its severe, it dosnt matter if it turns out to be nothing serious you still should make sure xx

Why don't you give NHS Direct a call? They are really good for advice and they will be able to tl yoi whether it's something that is OK to wait to see your GP.

possible gall stones for pain. as for lump its either stuck food from throwing up or you have ruptured the vessels when throwing up which is normal, not very nice, but if your concerned then see a doctor.. specially for the pain x

I agree I had to have my gall bladder removed 2 months after I had my daughter. Pain was in my chest and went to my back nothing really soothed it. I finally got so desperate and in pain that I went in and they admitted me. I would have to say go in, it can be very dangerous if thats what it is hun.

ETA- I was throwing up food too.

Thanks for your help ladies. As it happens it's nowhere near as bad today - obviously with the sheer force at which the food came up and the acidic content I must've irritated my gullet something chronic!! After practically living off of Zantac and Gaviscon it seems to have calmed down to something much more bearable. I am seeing the midwife on Thursday and will ask if she can have a word with the GP to see if they can prescribe me some Lansoprazole as that was the only thing that touched the pain last time when I had gastritis. If it had carried on though (I have since been able to keep food down) I was going to go to the GP-led health centre today to get checked out.. But it was just a false alarm. Thanks for the advice about the gallstones though, will keep it in mind if the pain comes back and it's different or anything xxxx
