Chances of first baby being engaged at 34 weeks? Worried about MW appt tomorrow.

Hiiii ladies ! Hope you're all feeling well.

I have a midwife appointment tomorrow and I will be 34+5. This is my first baby, and all of my pregnancy emails from baby sites and stuff keep saying that if this is my first baby, they will probably start to engage this week.

I'm now getting a little worried about tomorrow because I think I'll feel quite disappointed if my little boy isn't starting to engage at all. Even if his head is 4/5ths palpable (1/5th engaged) I would feel positive that things are moving along smoothly. Like I said, I'm just a bit worried that if he is still 'free' or totally palpable, i'll be a bit gutted .

People keep asking whether my baby has dropped yet or if I've been told that it is starting to engage and I keep saying I don't know and probably won't until my midwife tells me that they have. But then a lot of mums or mums-to-be who are further along than me say 'oh they probably haven't yet then, otherwise you'd know about it because you'd be feeling pressure'.

I know some babies don't engage until labour starts but I thought that was with 2nd/3rd babies etc and that first babies engage around now ?

Anyway, thanks for reading my little rant thingy I guess I'm just looking for some sort of shred of hope for tomorrow

Good luck ladies xxx

My baby which is my first was engaged (4/5 palpable) at 30 weeks. I can't speak for the norm, only from my experience but I was told that this was common so I wouldn't try to worry too much. I know that at 30 weeks they can still move position but at 34 weeks she was still head down and my midwife said it would be unlikely she'd now change. Good luck! X

Hiya, at my 36 week appointment baby boy was still totally out, not in at all! I'm just pleased that he's now head down after being breach until 28+ weeks. Got my 38 week appointment on thursday so i'll let you know
I'm now just concentrating on sitting forward on my yoga ball, trying to make myself go for walks etc.
Dont worry about it hun cos baby will do pretty much what s/he wants to and i have heard that some don't engage until labour regardless of 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc.

hey, i also have my midwife appointment tmrw but im pretty sure my baby hasnt dropped yet. I dont feel or look any different and iv always needed to pee lots. He was head down at 28 weeks, i know that much. my friend who is 11 days ahead of me, she has dropped so i guess i wont be too far behind, but like someone else said it all happens when its ready.

If your baby hasnt dropped, dont be disheartened. it doesent mean that things arnt going in the right direction. x

Yes, dropping is the same thing Your midwife will feel for the baby's head by pressing your bump down near your pelvis, and if she says that they are 1/5th engaged, for example, that means that she can feel 4/5ths of the baby's head (4/5 palpable). So 3/5ths engaged would mean 2/5ths palpable etc. xx
