I am in the south of the UK and they checked my cervix at 39 weeks - and they feel to see if baby is engaged from the out side by pressing on your pubic bone area and all around there. I am told though that some MWs in the UK do not actually even check your cervix until you think you might be in labour. I asked mine to check mine as I wanted to see what it was like (wish I hadn't as it bloody hurt, was told cervix is high, closed and Im not effaced...dumb cervix!!!)

I saw a consultant today. I was referred as mw couldn't tell position of baby. He pressed hard with two fingers near my pubic bone then said there's definately a head and its engaged in your pelvis I thought this was the case as I feel pain in my pubic bone area when i walk its like iv been kicked or something. MW hasn't mentioned checking my cervix at all.

I got told about the baby head being engaged and the head being in the right position by my MW at 28wks. At a later date closer to EDD she will check my dilation I feel, not too sure!

It depends on your midwife/where you are for checking for dilation...some in the UK don't check as all.

My last appointment was 38+4 weeks and she doesn't want to see me until I'm 41 weeks now, and was never checked for dilation then at all. (Saying that my midwife didn't check anything...she went to the toilet while the student did bits but that's another story!) I don't even know if she offers sweeps so don't know if she'll check for dilation at 41 weeks...we'll see.

As for being engaged they have always kind of cupped their hands so the thumb and first finger make a C-shape and feel down in the pubic area. I have NO idea what it feels like though!

They started checking whether baby was engaged from around 33 weeks I think. Feels really uncomfortable when they check I think! I dont think they check dilation etc until you are in labour. Have also heard that some mw don't offer sweeps, my mw hasn't mentioned anything but will ask her this afternoon.
