Failed glucose challenge test

So my OB called today that I failed the glucose challenge 1 hour test and I now have to take the 3 hour one. Apparently the levels should be between 4-7 and mine was 8, which is slightly over. Does anyone know what the rates of false positives are on the first test? What does the second test entail?

Thanks ladies! I'm freaking out a bit over here.

I failed the 1hr test twice and passed the 3hr test twice..lol (I had to do it twice bc of having twins and a family history so they tested me early the first time)

The 3 hr test is a fasting test. They told me nothing to eat/drink after midnight the night before. They take your blood and then have you drink the glucose solution. Then they take your blood 3 more times, in hour increments. Its not too bad, you just cant leave the lab during the test. I was very tired afterwards, probably from crashing after all the sugar..lol When do you go for the test?

Good luck

I failed the one hour test also, but then passed my 3 hour test.

The 1 hour test required no prep i just had to go in and drink the drink and then get my blood test 1 hour later. The 3 hour test required 3 days of eating more carbs then usual and then fasting from midnight the day before the test, then went in and had a blood test then drank the drink and then 3 hours later had another blood test.

I asked my midwife why i would have failed the 1hr test and not the 3hr and she said the 1hr is not overly accurate and a number of factors can contribute to a false positive (or high reading) My thoughts were that due to the fact i was told i did not have to fast i had a huge hot chocolate on the way to the hospital and a museli bar - may have led to a high reading.... also i had been on antibiotics due to having a really bad throat infection

I wouldn't think about it too much until you have done the next test

Thanks ladies for your advice! I go for the three hour one next Thursday. Hopefully I'll pass that one. The idea of having my blood drawn multiple times over a few hours is daunting but I'm sure its not that bad. I'll keep you updated!

If you can, bring a pillow or something comfy to curl up with while you are waiting between draws, and definitely a book, or game or something to do while waiting. I've had to do the 3 hr twice (once with first pregnancy - passed it, failed with current pregnancy), and the blood draws weren't as bad as I had expected but the waiting in between and the exhausted feeling afterwards were worse than I'd thought they would be!

I literally fell asleep during the 3rd hour, curled up in the waiting room, wishing I had a pillow

I fell asleep during my last one too, thank goodness the lab I was at had a room just for women taking the glucose test and it had big recliners in it....so it wasnt too bad!

Hi HUn! This happened to me too- I failed my 1 hour by 1 point- I took my 3 hour test on Friday- Im not going to lie, its a pain in the ass!!! LoL- You cant eat anything from midnight before- Then you go in, and they draw your blood- you have to then drink that crappy drink (they actually give you the whole bottle instead of half) Then you have to wait 1 hour, get blood taken, then wait another hour, get more blood take, wait another hour, and get more blood taken! LoL- I am soo happy my hubby came along because he kept me entertained! I suggest you take magazines, if you have a laptop take it, anything to keep you entertained I passed my 3 hour test btw The nurse told me alot of women fail the 1 hour one, but then pass the 3 hour test. Good luck sweetie
