other than general saftey.... crib mattress tips?

Hi ladies...

are there any special things or features regarding a crib mattress that i should be on the look out for?? Is this as big of a decision as picking our king size mattress was... ( soft, firm... etc.)

my mom said that they are all about the same and that babies shouldnt have an extra soft fluffy mattress (pillow top i guess)

??? any ideas?

No bumper pads...As baby can suffocate in them. And as small of bars as possible. So baby can't get stuck. Other than that nothing I can think of.

I got a mamas and papas sleepluxe and was told that the main side is not firm enough for the first few months but the bottom is and so to use it that side up until around 6 months. It's worth going into a couple of shops and tryin to find a knowledgable assistant. X

One without toxic flame ******ant chemicals, that's what I'm looking for! Stupid California passed a law that all mattresses sold in CA must pass flame-resistance tests (specifically to save those who like to smoke in bed and fall asleep with cigarettes in their hands). What this has to do with baby mattresses is beyond me!

The cheapest way for mattress companies to pass these tests is to fill their products with all kinds of flame ******ant chemicals. Makes me furious.

I'm looking at wool mattresses and latex foam mattresses - will try to update if I find some decent sources or products.

Note - just realized, for some reason this website ***'s out the word r-e-t-a-r-d, I am trying to say flame r-e-t-a-r-d-a-n-t chemicals, just so you know.

I would go for one with ventilation, or that is breathable. My daughter sweats loads, and we live in a warm climate, so this was compulsory for us.

Also a removable cover in case they pee through to the mattress. Ours has a removable cover, although we had no idea until she peed on it and my OH saw it had a zip on it

We use the under sheet mats (Pampers make them) that soak up the spillages, but sometimes she pees to the edge of them and catches us out

The mattress we bought was £70 I think; the second most expensive one the shop had. They say you're only supposed to use a mattress for one child, but we will be using it for two. Don't have much choice as money has run desperately low.
