Best oil to use for Perineal Massage?

We tried perineal massage for the first time last night. My DH tried using Olive Oil (extra light) and it stung quite a bit and made my skin red - is this because it was the 'light version' I wonder?

I was wondering what would be best? Im guessing oil is better than using KY Jelly as oil will actually moisturise the skin making it more flexible?

I've heard about Sweet Almond Oil? - I have some Jojoba Oil might that work?

Any advice appreciated! Im now 29 weeks and want to have roughly 8 weeks of massage to improve my chances of not tearing!

thanks

Try coconut oil. Its super silky and doesnt need a second application...it goes a long way. Also a natural antibacterial and anti fungal which is good.

Not sure. I have used KY and it worked fine (certainly didn't burn). But I can see your point about oil maybe working better. I have read that mineral oil is good for it.

I was recommended Almond oil and it is also a great carrier oil if you want to use Clary sage oil massages on your bump.

I've literally been wondering the same thing myself for the last week.
I did a tonne of research/reading reviews, and have finally settled on this : - Boo Boo's Perineum Massage Oil
I must add though, from everything I've read my understanding was that you shouldn't be doing this until at least 34 weeks onwards. I'm starting next week to be on the safe side, as I don't know if there are associated dangers from starting earlier. As you are only 29 weeks, I would say don't start just yet..

hmm....I think Ill do a bit more research then, thank you for the heads up!
In the Hypnobirthing book it says that you need 8 - 10 weeks of massage for it to be effective but Ill see what the majority seem to say before starting now :-)

I just started doing it, with olive oil. But I use olive oil all over my body, I think it absorbs better then coconut oil for me.

I'll be using almond oil when the time comes.

Also heard that you shouldn't start until week34 at the earliest (something about the massage releasing prostaglandins which can kick-start uterine contractions...)

personally, I would use a lube meant for lady parts... Other oils could lead to a nasty infection...
