Second hand baby clothes?

I've got some new baby clothes. My nan got us some for christmas.. several little vests and a couple of sleep suits.
I've also bought a few more sleep suits myself.

I had the idea to buy second hand baby clothes from ebay though.
I've seen people selling in bundles, and a lot cheaper than the stores.
Plus they grow so quickly, I could spend loads on clothes that the baby will only get one or two wears out of!

But quite a few people have been rather disgusted that i'd even consider buying second hand (obviously i'd wash them a couple of times before i'd put them anywhere NEAR a newborn).

My OH is very against the thought of his little boy wearing second hand clothes (though i'm not sure he'll feel that way when i'm not working and clothes are relying on HIS wage.. ), and my nan sounded quite horrified at the thought as well.

(Of course i'd love to have a wonderful collection of brand new baby clothes, but budgetting is hard enough as it is.)

I was wondering peoples thoughts on it.

I don't like the idea of second hand clothes.. but does anyone know any reasons why it could be a bad idea or if it could somehow be dangerous for the baby?

90% of my little man stuff is second hand...either from ebay or from friends and family who have passed on stuff as there LO got to big.

as u said they get big so quickly i am not going out spending hundred on clothes they will only wear once or twice.

The only new things we have bought are either brand new baby or 6 months + everything in between second hand.

I bought tons of second hand clothes for my son, like you said, they grow so fast its hard to spend a lot of money on new outfits they will only wear for a short amount of time. I bleach all the whites at least twice when first getting them, then with the rest I wash them 2-3 times...and then at least once more before baby comes... I don't really see anything gross about it. Your washing them thoroughly and they are just clothes...I also might add that I do NOT buy anything that has been stained or looks like they have been worn alot. It saves money, dont be ashamed.

Geez, really? I'd say about 80% of what we have for baby is secondhand! Who cares? They're babies, they don't care about status. And it's not gross if you sanitize them. I've actually been wondering who buys all the new baby clothes since the people I know just pass them around from baby to baby.

Put the money you save into a fund for the kid's clothes when he gets to be a teenager--that's when he'll care, LOL.

It's not a matter of money for us, but why spend tons if you can get the same amount of use for so much less? Babies grow so fast that a lot of the stuff you find secondhand has only been worn a few times. Sometimes not at all!

A lot of my son Aaron's stuff was second hand from his brother Jamie and some of them were second hand when Jamie was born, this little man will be having what we've kept of Aaron's clothes and just bought sizes we needed like newborn and 0-3 months

Megan still to this day wears lots of 2nd hand clothes. We could afford to buy all new but I think it's a waste of money. My mom goes to lots of garage sales and buys clothes that look barely worn. I do have some new things for her and will for baby too... But really I don't see the difference. I buy used first and fill in the gaps with new. Some things I've found at garage sales still had tags on them. I've gotten fancy Xmas dresses and dresses to wear to weddings for her that looked brand new... And the seller even talked about them being worn once and being happy someone else could use them.

Megan wore size 3-6 month for less than 2 weeks. I had brand new sleepers in that size that she wore once! And I had outfits that were gifts that she outgrew before she had somewhere to wear them to.

I worry about bed bugs, roaches, etc., and that is only because I am a germophobe. Really. I'd not buy second hand from e-bay, but would accept second hand from people I know are clean, etc.
