Autism Rates HIGHER in Military Families

After doing some research online i have learned that autism rates in military families are higher than the national U.S average. On average 1 in 110 kids will be diagnosed with autism. Military families have an average of 1 in 88 kids being diagnosed with autism. Also another interesting fact is that on average there are more GIRLS born into military families than BOYS.

First off this makes me worry for my baby boy. Secondly it makes me worry for my husband. What on earth is the military exposing our soldiers to in order to alter their bodies in such a way that causes these issues? There has to be a reason why there is more military families with autistic kids and more military families with female babies. I know i will probably never get an answer, but i do find it concerning.

This is very strange. I have never heard of this, but I do believe it. Could it be the stress that the military is subjecting their Soldiers' to before and during the pregnancy that could be causing these outcomes?

I am a military wife and we are expecting a little girl.

I had never heard this but the first things that come to my mind that are unique to the military as a group, are the stress of deployments (for both parties soldier and at-home spouse), environment of deployments (for soldier - chemicals, medicines, unecessary interventions like the ANTHRAX vaccine of all things, other unusual environmental factors), and that the medical screening and record keeping may be better than in the civilian world.

Personally I believe autism probably has a great deal of a genetic foundation that then appears with certain environmental triggers, like exposure to chemicals and toxins. The fact that military parents are subject to more/ different stressors and unique environments could even affect our kids before they are concieved, but these factors are difficult to measure.

THAT SAID try not to worry too much about your child specifically - easier said than done! In the big picture, 1/88 and 1/110 arent that different. Dont read up too much more because youll probably freak yourself out unecessarily!

ETA I am also a military wife

My parents had my brother before dad joined the army and he has autism. More specifically, he has Asperger's Syndrome. But that was before he enlisted. After he joined the army, they had me and then my sister. So only girls during his career. Interesting.

Hmm I never heard the autism thing, interesting, it's certainly understandable.

The baby girl thing is interesting also. I am having a girl and a lot of guys in my husbands unit have girls. Lots more girl children then boy children actually!

Maybe girl sperm are more hearty and stand up to stress better than male sperm.

Hopefully my little boy really is a little boy. So far I'm the only one on this thread who's expecting a boy...

They do give them alot of strange shots and military families are under more stress than most other families. I worry about the autism factor now that I have read the statistics. They claim that the highest rates of autism in military families are with those who have low rank and young parents. I wonder why more people don't know about these statistics, I had no clue until this afternoon.

Military families have health ins yes? But not all members of the public out of the military do so its impossible to get a proper perspective, chances are it would even out I have a son with autism btw.

Very interesting about girls being born though, all my military friends have girls!
