Baby products.. suggestions please

34 weeks now... yayy
And finally trying to finish up the remaining shopping list for baby, me and hospital. Reading up forums and reviews but still confused about some of the items on my list. Would you lovely ladies pls help me with suggestions/ recommendations for below?

- Baby moisturiser/ lotion
- Massage Oil - if plain old olive oil, then where/ which one do you use? They range from a tesco basic one to H&B to more premium ones
- Room thermometer - do I need one? which one you'd go for?
- Calpol for fever (from birth) - will you stock this before LO arrives?
- Nasal saline drops - which one?
- Nasal aspirator - which one?
- Baby thermometer - type? brand?
- Oral syringe - for giving medicine etc?
- Swaddling - sheets? pods? bags? brand??

Thank you for your help!

I've not bought any baby lotion, I've been given a couple bottles so will use that if I need it. At my antenatal classes they said not to bother with baby lotion to begin with and literally just use baby shampoo when you bath them.

I don't know whether a room thermometer is an essential, but I decided to get one because my house can get really cold during the night. I bought the GroEgg in Asda and it's brilliant, we even have it on now and my OH likes checking to see when it changes colour haha.

I bought a baby healthcare kit from Boots which had a nasal aspirator, thermometer, hairbrush, toothbrush, nail clippers etc in it.

I will be interested to hear what people say about calpol and swaddling blankets because I've not got either of these yet

Baby moisturiser, I've bought the Johnson's Bedtime range, used it with all mine and never had a problem. Also got a little trial pack of Asda's Little Angels range which is supposed to be good

Massage oil, haven't bought any and don't have a room thermometer yet but thinking about getting the Gro Egg.

Calpol is from 2 months old isn't it?! I haven't bought any and won't unless baby needs it after his 1st injections. Have bought some Infacol though as it was a godsend with my previous 2. Saline drops again I haven't bought but they are all the same from the very basic ones you can get free over the counter to the calpol or similar ones. Nasal aspirator, I don't get on with, don't work imo and just upset baby even more so again I've not got one.

Oral syringe is pretty basic and you can normally get one over the counter from the chemist if you need one. Thermometer, I have one of those digital ones you put under the armpit, I also have a strip forehead one but have been told they aren't very accurate. Ear ones are supposed to be the best but you can get dummy ones now too.

And swaddling I've never done, just use a cellular blanket til they are big enough for a sleeping bag in the cot. I think it depends on the baby, some love being swaddled, some don't.

HTH

xx

The only thing I'd say is be very careful with Johnson's products as they are actually incredibly harsh on new baby skin. I could never use them with DD and I know several people with skin issues who have to avoid them. I always used Oilatum with DD.

As for the rest, it's so long ago, I don't remember!

For baby wash I used Johnsons Bedtime Bath when my son was young. It has a nice lavender scent to it and is suppose to calm babies and get them ready for sleep. Used it with my 1st son and bought some for this baby as well. I didn't use any lotions on my 1st until he developed eczema when he got a little older, then I switched to Baby Aveeno products, which are a little pricey but great for babies who have sensitive skin!

I have most things on your list.
Still need to get calpol, which i'm getting before LO is here.

I am also going to get some Infacol incase LO has colic. I suffered terribly from it, so i'm going to make sure I have some at home incase LO suffers too

Thanks ladies!

Any thoughts anyone on which olive oil or which massage oil in general to use for baby's initial massages?

I'll be using coconut oil (virgin and organic) as lotion, massage oil and diaper cream. No additives/chemicals and it's very agreeable with newborn skin

My mum bought me a crapload of Johnson's products but I'm not keen to use them as they're full of additives/chemicals/preservatives and I'd rather just use natural stuff on her sensitive skin.

Calpol is definately from 2 months, I went shopping with my friend yesterday to get some for her 7 week old in readiness for her vaccinations next week.

Infacol from birth and its a good idea to get it on hand if needed, can be used from birth.

Nasal aspirator, my friend bought one yesterday from Boots chemist, she never got on with the older ones she had for other 2 children, but was impressed with this one. http://www.boots.com/webapp/wcs/stor...2853#container You can probably get this when needed tbh, the weather is changing atm by next month, colds should be not as common so you may not need till later in the year. The same for saline drops, any brand is pretty much the same, I would wait to see if you need it first.

I do have Johnsons baby oil and lotion, only because I got the Johnsons starter box when it was £8 instead of £25 in the asda baby event in January. The talc that came with it won't be used on baby, midwife says not to use so I will keep it for me, am using tonnes of it drying under my boobs with these huge pregnancy knockers

I have a digital thermometer I will use under babies armpit, its the same one I used years ago as a student midwife and thats how we did temps on the wards. Am not a midwife now btw, I went and worked in labs instead but kept my own equipment I had purchased for my use.

I have 2 swaddle wraps, 3 sleeping bags 2.5 tog 0-6 months and will get some 1 tog when I need them. I have 4 or 5 cellular blankets I have been given and a few knitted blankets to come from my auntie. My friend is giving me a few sheets for use on any days and nights where its too warm for anything else, but those nights are few and far between in UK so will get them off her after baby is here. I have a book that tells me how many sheets / blankets / sleeping bags / swaddle wraps etc to use depending on room temp, so will use room temp thermometer to decide what baby needs at that time, better than guessing the room temp imo.

I have the avent room thermometer which can also be used as a bath thermometer and is a digital read out.

Hey, I am avoiding Johnsons as when I grew up with bad eczema I was allergic to that, and trying to prevent any reactions with baby, using aveeno instead, bought it online for the baby range because couldn't find it in boots, someone suggested a "baby nose clear" from boots which is like a nose hoover, coz apparently aspirators aren't as good.
I have calpol from 2months, baby bongela and infacol at the ready as they last until when I might need them and I like to be prepared!!
Got the tommee tippie care pack thingy with clippers etc in too.
Am going to be getting a little cardboard room thermometer even tho I like the grobag one, I just got a cheaper one and lack electric sockets in the baby room so less plugged in things the better!
As for swaddling, I have got two baby swaddle blankets from summerbaby or something? got them from Ebay, but a large blanket should be fine!
