Timing Contractions?

Hello ladies. I've been having contractions, and I am just wondering exactly what I'm supposed to be timing? I get like a shooting pain in my bump, and it gets really hard all across it, then the pain dwindles down, but my belly is still hard...? And by the time the next one comes, I haven't noticed my belly soften much, if at all. So my question is, do I go from when the pain starts and stops? Or if/when my belly softens? Thanks!

You count from the beginning of one to the beginning of the next one. And you go by the pain.

Start timing when you begin to feel the pain coming and take note of what time the pain stops and what time the next wave of pain comes. This will tell you how long the contraction is an how far apart they are coming

For example, pains starts so you begin your timer/stopwatch. 30 seconds go by and the pain stops. 4 1/2 more minutes go by and then a new contraction starts. This means your contractions are coming every 5 minutes (the start of one contraction to the start of another) and last for 30 seconds
