Anyone else on Clexane?

Yesterday i had an appointment with consultant and to reduce the risks of any clots before or after birth they want me to self inject myself with clexane. Im booked in to have a section in May and am in the high risk group for developing a clot therefore have been advised to take this blood thinning injection. Anyone else on it?

I've been on this since i was six weeks pregnant. I believe it's standard to have it for a few weeks after a c-section.
Honestly it isn't a big deal, I've got used to injecting myself. They give you very easy to use safety syringes and it isn't a big needle at all. It can sting a bit sometimes but it isn't especially painful. My main tip is don't rub where you inject or you'll get a bruise there.

I was on this at 24 weeks when I had a bad chest infection, as Kat said, the injections are really easy, sting a little when you push the plunger but really nothing to write home about! I was on them for three weeks and got all of one bruise/mark

Kat - stupid question possibly, but why would it be standard to have blood thinners after a c-section? Surely you want the blood to clot to heal properly? I think I was told that if a scheduled c-section situation arose for me I would be asked to come off the thinners in advance...just wondering really!

i was on clexane about 3 weeks before i got preg and until i was about 16 weeks preg. but i started to have some bleeds etc and i was stoppped on the clex.

its not that bad though having the injection. i had to have two a day one in the morning and one in the evening! the only thing is after a month or so i did start getting bruises from it....!! but it wasnt painful as such! so dont worry!!

i might be havign a c section due to my leading twin being breeched so would be interested to know if they will give me clex again???

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I guess it depends on why you are on them. Shortly after birth women are more at risk of DVT than at any other time. I believe that a surgical birth further increases the risk due to being even less mobile during recovery that's why a lot of people are given clexane after a c-section. Especially if you have other risk factors such as being overweight. Obviously DVT is very dangerous so they are keen to minimise the risks.

That makes sense, and actually after thinking about it I was put on clexane due to being less mobile (and I had the funky socks!) even though I'd never been at risk of DVT before. So a c-section would come under the same circumstances of being less mobile etc. Thanks for clearing up my confused baby brain!

thanks for your replies ladies. Glad to know im not the only one injecting myself LOL. I went to hospital to pick up my prescription today of injections and was shown how to inject myself by a midwife i will start as of 2moro. I am in high risk group due to my bmi therefore will have to take up until birth and after birth for 5 weeks.

Ive been on it since 6 weeks also and have been told I need to miss the dose the night before my C-section and then I'll be back on it the night after for another 6 weeks.... only thing Ive found is the bigger the bump gets the harder it feels to inject although that may just be in my mind lol!
When I was in hospital at christmas for surgery clexaine was given to everyone after their ops so I guess its a new thing x

No it isn't just in your mind! I'm finding it harder with a bigger bump - there isn't as much fat to grab on the belly area as it is all stretched out and also it is hard to see where you haven't got a bruise on the bump in order to find a good stabbing spot. You can inject in your thigh I believe but I don't like the idea of that myself.

Im glad its not just me then lol!
Its as if the skin has got tougher and it takes more pressure to get the needle in if that makes sence but I agree it does get harder to pinch also... one thing I have found that helps and stops the sting is to inject into old stretch marks as the skin is so much thinner & I dont have to look far to find one as sadly I have a few
