Pelvic Girdle Pain

So I was diagnosed with this yesterday, it came on out of the blue on Friday while I was shopping at Tesco's, I am now on crutches & am considering getting a pelvic band, I tried one at physio yesterday but it didn't seem to help me out any. I am hoping that the pain will ease off though, I don't want this for another 12 weeks, I am still working, maternity leave doesn't start until June 1st but they have offered to sign me off until week 36 but the temp that is covering for me doesn't start until next Tuesday then I have a colleague arriving from overseas the following week, I am hoping that I can last until May 1st, I may have to start my maternity leave then I suppose.

Anyone else had experience of this, did you find anything that helped?

The only thing that has really helped me is staying off my feet as much as possible. Try to keep your knees together when moving in bed and getting in and out of cars.

I tried taking regular paracetamol as suggested by my midwife, but it didn't help me.

I was diagnosed with this last week , though it has been bothering me for a while. My doc prescribed a support belt, I honestly can't say yet if it helps yet or not.

So far I have found the thing that helps the most is modifying my everyday movements. As the previous poster mentioned keep your knees together when getting in and out of the car and rolling over in bed. Sit down when you are getting dressed, so you don't separate your legs too much when taking off/putting on pants and socks. I also find limiting how many times I take the stairs helps. Oh, and this is a big one for me....do not cross your legs when seated. I find this so hard not to do! But I notice if I make the effort to sit with my knees together I feel better later. Also try not to sit cross-legged if you are sitting on the ground or on the couch.

I hope you are able to manage the pain. I am really not sure what this will mean when it comes time to deliver, but at least my doctor is aware.

SPD sucks and I dont even have an extreme case by any means (Im very lucky compared to some as only get it in my hips and back). I find my tubigrip helps sometimes but not always. Exercises the physio gave me helps and I try not to twist my body too much. Hope it gets better for you.

Thanks - I am hoping mine does get better, I think I made it worse on Friday because instead of stopping when it hurt I thought if I push past the pain it would ease so I think I actually made it worse, I suppose I may have to consider taking sick leave at some point but my head isn't ready to be sat at home yet...

I've also got this... It's a horrible thing. Got crutches & pelvic support belt from Physio. To tell you the truth taking it easy is the only thing that helps. Walking any distance, hoovering, getting stuff out of low cupboards or washing machine, getting in & out of bath to name but a few thing make it feel worse but some things just can't be avoided. I'm signed off work with this, really wish I could go in but with my job it would be impossible. Unfortunately it doesn't look like I'll be back before mat leave starts & will have to start it earlier than i planned at 36 weeks.
Paracetamol made no difference for me either so I stopped taking them.
Feel useless.
If you haven't already, try sleeping with a pillow between your legs & do the exercises your Physio has given you. (If s/he hasn't given you any I can scan the sheets my Physio gave me & send them to you..)
Talking from experience don't push through the pain & keep going it'll only make you feel worse in the long run.
Take it easy while you can hon

Thanks for this, she did give me a leaflet which explains some exercises to do & I am doing them, I also do have a maternity pillow so am sleeping with that between my knees, luckily my job is a sitting down job & work are very supportive that I can hopefully last as long as I can.

Hope yours eases soon x

I have it and have since 23 weeks. Each week that goes by is so much worse due to all the pressure on my pelvis from my growing baby/uterus. It's very painful but unfortunately for me not much helps other than having baths often and relaxing and staying off my feet when possible.

I've had it since 16 weeks and it's fricken vile - mine's really bad now at 33 weeks.

Belts - meh - they sorta work till they ride up and if you sit down too fast you feel like you're going to ping yourself off the chair.

Tubigrip - flipping useless - you sit down, you feel like you've got a roller blind from the kitchen slowly working its way up to a roll under your boobs (does iron out the B shape on my bump though)

Crutches - work but are so hideously frustratingly slow (and your hands and arms knack till you get used to using them). Also handy for walloping errant husbands making snarky wisecracks in the middle of Tescos... but you don't half realise how vile humanity is towards those they percieve as being "in the way" until you spend an extended period of time on crutches (I've been on them a month and a half now - was on them by about 25 weeks)...and disgustingly - the worst I've found have been women with pushchairs physically trying to ram you off the pavement (when I'm very obviousy heavily pregnant with crutches so it's fairly clear what's up with me - even I am well beyond the "is she fat" dilemma by now).

I've found if I get up, do the laundry and stuff, then go back to lie down for an hour or so I can minimise the pain - I'm too scared to have a bath in case I get stuck in there, but having a shower and aiming the jet at my ladybits and bum while doing a hula hooping type motion does free me up from the pain somewhat (but is getting increasingly hard to do in a small shower cubicle with a bump) and generally taking it easy - but now at 33 weeks I'm essentially housebound a lot of the time unless someone comes out with me - driving's getting hard when I need clutch control and the like to manouver into parking spaces and I'm pretty chuffingly well fed up.

Had to stop work about 28 weeks - really shouldn't have gone till then to be honest, as it was working with 4 year olds, so lots of climbing up and down onto the floor, sitting on really low chairs and what-not... since I'm agency staff with no sickness/maternity rights whatsoever (because of how work's been this year I don't even get maternity allowance) - that was fun.

wow - yours sounds really bad. I am trying to find out what the sick pay situation is for me at work or if they would let me work from home, I am trying & but at the end of each day I can barely move, it is making me realise that I do need to do nothing but sit & watch tv or read now, if they will pay me full sick pay until June 1st then I am going to go & get a sick note from the dr, I can't afford to go onto ssp just yet & if I start my maternity now I will have to come back way earlier than I really want to. I figured I would rest up over the long weekend now & see what next week brings & make my decision then but unless I have a sudden miraculous bounce back I don't think I will last much longer.
