It's basically when they reach in and if your dilated any, they can separate your membranes from the cervix which I believe releases a hormone that's supposed to start labor. But it doesn't always work for everyone.

I am like this too! I will decide on the sweep when the time comes. Even though I have actually never had in an internal exam (smear or anything) in my life, I will not be refusing them during labor. I am pretty sure that I finally won't care...

Yes, I know that is bad that I have completely forsaken gyno care my whole life...please don't scold me!

I will be refusing internal exams unless there are any problems. I'm hopefully having a homebirth anyway and my MW said they pretty much leave you alone to labour at home unless the baby shows signs of distress.

I will be begging my MW for a sweep at my next appointment as I will only be 39+5 so 2 days earlier than they would normally do one but I want this baby out now and how I see it is labor will be way worse than a quick sweep so no point getting worked up about the small things when there are much bigger things to come x

I'm 38 weeks and had one today. I was also 2cm dilated. Dr chose not to break my waters but is inducing me friday if nothing happens before then. I thought I would be embarrassed but in all honesty it was over so quickly and I was concentrating on staying as relaxed as possible. It was uncomfortable but not sore x

I find internals very painful so a sweep will hurt!

My friends just had 3 and was then induced anyways... she was crying at all 3 as the midwife puts her finger INSIDE your cervix and trys to stretch it to separate the membranes to release the hormones that start labor.

I know some woman have said they dont hurt but it really does depend on how stretchy your vagina is, how soft your cervix is and how far dilated you already are! If those 3 arnt favorable it will hurt more.

I have one booked for 41wks if i get that far! I wouldn't worry about it and you do need quite a few internals while in labour to check dilation etc. Try not to worry there professionals and have seen it all before x

I have just got back from getting it done. I so almost ran away! but I kept thinking it would be really good if she could be born this weeked.

But honestly it was OK. It wasn't embarassing because in a weird way it didn't feel like she was doing it. It was a tiny bit uncomfortable but I wouldn't describe it as painful. I had a box of paracetamol ready but didn't need.

Hope it works, if not got another booked for next Weds, and if that doesn't work induction next Fri

xxxx
