31+5 but measuring 35 - advice please

Hi ladies,

I just want to put my mind at rest here really.

Was at the midwife this morning (didnt see my normal midwife as she is on holiday) - and apparently I am measuring a bit big at 35 when I am only 31+5. She had a good feel about and listened to heart beat which she found difficult to find (Never had this problem before) but apparaently she thinks baby is a normal size I just have excess fluid - which can relut in bigger measurement and trouble locating heart beat. We got there in the end and I have a wriggler so we know bubs is fine. So her recommendation is to see my consultant as planned in 2 weeks and get remeasured and if I am still measuring big they might send me for a scan.

What I really want to know is what does having excess fluid actually mean - can it have any negative effects? I read I might get put on bed rest? (Hope not - planning on working right up to 37 weeks if I can)

Advice is much appreciated lovelies x

Hi hun dont think it means anything really.
i had a scan at 28weeks and was told baby is weighing above average, well he was weighing the same as an average baby at 32 weeks and he was 28weeks at the time lol.

I think unless you had a growth scan its difficult to tell if its a lot of water or baby is bigger. my other two were bigger too x

I had this too this morning - officially 31+0 & I'm measuring 32 but according to 20 week scan date I'm 32 wks on fri so I don't think that's a massive difference but midwife has really made me worry, talking about excess fluid or baby being big & wants to see me in 2 more weeks to review. Hate it when you come away not knowing whether to be worried or not.

Ive been measuring ahead since about 28 weeks, measured 34cm then and 38cm at 32 week appointment. Growth scan showed I had higher amount of fluid but nothing to be concerned about, ive noticed that the tape measurments of your bump can be well off, I had two appointments in one week one for my growth scan where I measured 38cm and the day after I only measured 34cm at normal midwife appointment! they told me not to be concerned because midwifes measure differently and it can also be affected what time of day it is etc.

They will probably check you for polyhydramnios next time you go if you are still measuring ahead theres some info here about it

The issue with having too much fluid is that baby has more freedom of movement and can get wrapped up in the cord. BUT just measuring big is certainly no reason to worry! Baby's position can change a measurement from minute to minute, and drastically! I always measured ahead with my son. And every set of hands that measured me had measured me different from the last!

I don't knOw about the excess fluid. I was measuring 4 weeks ahead at one point in my pregnancy too. Now I'm back to normal. It could just go away. Y your next visit so I wouldn't worry too much for now.
