skin-to-skin.. how long?

How long do you plan to have skin-to-skin contact after the baby is delivered before him/her being washed, wrapped ect..?
Has any of your midwifes or doctors discussed what the ideal time is?

I am giving birth in Fiji and delivery practices are very different here. Immediate skin-to-skin contact is very uncommon.

I have discussed with my Dr that I DO want the immediate skin-to-skin contact after delivery, and that (unless a medical necessity) I'd like to keep my little girl at my chest at least till the first feed. So I imagine this could be up to an hour or so?

Has anyone discussed this with you, or do you have experience keeping your baby skin-to-skin for a reasonable time?

Thanks!

I plan on skin-to-skin after delivery for as long as possible! As you say, probably until after the first feed! Then they can wash him and do all the necessary checks! When we're left on our own, DH will have some skin-to-skin time while I have a good wash and freshen up! That's the plan anyway!

I'va asked for a skin-to-skin time this time (as I didn't get it for the 2 previous babies) and was told by the midwife it could be up to 2 hours (unless something wouldn't be OK with the baby or me).

thanks ladies!

I kinda witnessed a baby being born this week when i went to see the Dr for my weekly visit. My Dr was called away to the room across the hall and we heard a lady pushing and moaning.. and then the first cries of the baby!!
Not even a minute later the pediatrician walking out the room with a gooey newborn on her way to the nursery to clean baby up and give him injections (as we could see through the window). So that confirmed with what my Dr had mentioned before that they are unfamiliar with the practice of skin-to-skin contact.

So unless I specifically stress the fact that I DO want the skin-to-skin contact, I am afraid my little girl will unnecessarily be whisked away. So that will in bold in my birthplan!!

Ive wondered this too so thanks for posting it.

So does that mean that hubby cant hold bubba until after that then cause it wont be all wrapped up? I dont want him to have to wait 2 hours before he can hold him. How long before they cut the cord if you dont tell them to wait until its stopped pulsing. Is it just done straight away? Oh and how long does it normally take to deliver the placenta after bubba born? x

I was wondering that about Dad holding baby, think I will just pass them over even for just a short cuddle with Daddy then have them back for more skin time and feeding, and the cord is usually cut pretty quickly if you dont specify any differently, my OH wants to cut it, never let my ex do that and he never wanted to LOL and my placentas have always come out quick as I have had an injection to make it come out fast. Usually within ten mins or so, feels very werid flopping out ha ha

At my hospital they put her on my chest and got me to try to nurse her immediately. I tried to let my husband hold her for a bit because it's supposed to be goOd. For bonding, but they took her away from him after a minute and gave her back to me. I was annoyed about that.

I live in the States, and at my hospital I will have an hour with my baby girl after I give birth. They actually encourgage it which I thought was awesome!
After the hour is up then they will take her to the nursery to get cleaned up and weighed. Then she will come back to me as she will be in my room as I am breastfeeding.
