Wow, it just baffles me really. I can't get my head around why they don't seem to wait until 40 weeks.

With my first my doctor was very con induction and let me go to 41 weeks. At that point, he was getting nervous about how big he was going to be, how the placenta was functioning etc. It's not always true that we are induced at 38 weeks.
I'm a nurse on an L&D floor and there is a huge push in the area I live NOT to do inductions before 39 weeks unless they are medically necessary. We will not book an induction unless there is a medical reason and medical proof it is required.

Here you have to be overdue before they will induce you, mine is booked for next week and i'll be 40+11. I thought the reason to be induced was because you have gone over your due date - unless there are other medical reasons obviously.

We also pay for private insurance. Where you are your government pays for health care so they obviously don't want to do anything extra because it costs more. Epidurals, inductions, they are all expensive. We or our insurance pay for it so Dr's don't care to do it if you want to. It's not like Dr's goo around saying "you're 38 weeks, let's induce you.". Most people don't get induced til after their due date.

I think another reason is quite often in the US the ladies actual dr delivers their baby so they try to get them in when the dr will be there, whereas as if we have no complications we just get delivered by whoever is on shift at that time and wont see a dr unless something is wrong

They usually aren't. I think you have some misconceptions.

I'm guessing in some areas it's convenience for all parties involved. It's not just the women who don't like the waiting game. There are a lot of doctors here that like knowing when their patients will have their babies. Makes no sense.....
I feel like I'm in the middle ground. I can see not letting a woman go past 41 weeks but truly, if there is no medical emergency, you should be allowed to get to that point.

...I'll just add that much of it depends on where you are the philosophy of your doctor's practice. I personally don't know anyone who has had a "sweep," though most ladies I know are checked for dilation and effacement weekly beginning at 36 weeks. I know many women who go 40+ weeks. You have to realize as well that there are still not many midwives in the US---at least in North Carolina. We are seen by doctors throughout the entire pregnancy and the whole experience is generally very "medical" in nature. We do have midwives in our area and they are often very sought after....but our medical system is so different, it's like comparing apples and oranges. Well, after all that rambling I don't know if I added anything relevant or not! Regardless of the "procedures" we all want the same outcome .
