Glucose Tolerance Test UPDATE p. 3

Hi ladies. Just got the call that I failed my one hour glucose tolerance test. My level was "elevated" at 141. Do you know what the normal range should be? She did not tell me and my midwives never told me either.

Now have to do the three hour... SO not looking forward to it . I know many women take the 3 hour test and pass just fine, but I think it's totally ridiculous to poke pregnant women 4-5 times with a needle and make them sit in the most uncomfortable chairs (when the lower back pain is awful enough) without being able to even walk around outside!!!!! And I know I'm going to be absolutely ravenous by the time I leave.

Sorry for the rant, but I am just a little bummed right now.

You poor thing, you missed it by one point. =/ 140 and under is okay.

They let me get up and walk around, the even let me leave the hospital. But I puked after the fasting test and the 1st one, so they made me do it again. and then I puked at that one. So they told me to be careful about what I eat =) the 3 hour is a pain in the ass. Bring a book you like, and something to distract you from the sugar rush.

I, personally, think the 3 hr test is a form of cruel and unusual punishment.

OH! If you have noticed any weird low or high b/s issues, and the hospital they have you do it at is more than two mintues from your house, I'd reccomend you get someone to come with you.

I totally agree.... it is cruel. I can't even leave LabCorp... and the sketchy people that come in there are totally unpleasant. I have cooled down a little because I know that no matter what I have to do it.. Did you fast before the one hour/?

I don't understand why we don't fast for the 1 hour. I was told I could eat a light breakfast as along as it wasn't "Captain Crunch"... the midwife's exact words. I would think fasting for the one hour would eliminate more 3 hour tests.....

I did indeed fast for the 1hr. We were required to fast for two hours prior to drinking the drink of death, and the test was one hour after the drink. I scored 187.
For the 3 hour, I was told to fast starting at midnight. My starting blood test was 79, my first one after the drink was 190, and then I puked.
They actually have a modified version you can discuss with your dr...You eat a normal breakfast, then test one hour after. Its no where near as accurate, but it's a lot more tolerable. Luckily for me, I'm hypoglycemic IRL (not pregnant world lol) and am fairly attuned to how I feel when I'm low or high, and I've also got a really good grasp on what foods are okay and not okay.

I think there's something fishy with the glucose tests, personally. For one, I didn't get any instruction as to eat/not eat before my test so I called my nurse who seemed very reluctant to tell me that I should eat a light, protein-y breakfast at least two hours before the test. It seems like there's so much misinformation and lack of information that women are set up to fail, so they have to take the three hour. The conspiracy theorist in my says it's to make money I didn't eat any carbs and had very little sugar for breakfast and I passed the one hour but if I'd eaten what I normally do at the normal time, I doubt I would've passed.

I am thinking the same thing... it truly does seem that the one hour tests are set up that way. Even the Lab Corp tech couldn't believe that I did not have to fast, but I showed them my doc papers. This is so ridiculous! It should just be fasting for everything and then I doubt many moms would have to do the awful 3 hour test. I was just told not to eat super sugar, so I ate a very small bowl of regular Cheerios about 5 hours before my test. I was not given any instruction on what to eat, just told not to eat "captain crunch". Ugh.

I failed because of orange juice... my three hour came out perfect, but they didn't tell me to do ANYTHING different for the 1 hour, and I usually don't drink orange juice but I felt a cold coming..

They set you up for failure, I really feel that way.
