Open floor plan apartment, and pets. Anyone else?

We have a good sized apartment but it has a completely open floor plan. Literally, the only doors are on the bathrooms. We also have two enormous, (12 pounds and 16 pounds!) curious cats.

I am a little stressed about keeping them away from the baby. One is really playful and the other is getting strangely aggressive lately. I guess he is getting old. I also worry a little about about keeping baby's area relatively free of cat hair, etc. I'd love to move to a place with proper bedrooms but my city has a severe housing shortage. The waiting list for apartments is usually 2 to 5 years...we've been on the list for just 8 months.

Anyone else have pets and no proper nursery? Do you have any brilliant ideas about how to manage that you would like to share? Currently I am considering mosquito netting over the crib. Does that sound crazy?

You can get special cat nets for going over the cot etc. I was a little worried about this too, but my two cats have not really shown much interest in LO. Other than to either look a bit scared or run away when she's screaming!

Thanks! I didn't know cat net existed. I'll start by looking at pet stores. Good to know because I did NOT think I was going to have much luck finding mosquito netting where I live

Also, Cats learn quickly that babies scream and move and they dont like them. I've never found an actual news article of a baby being hurt by a cat... (I had a huge argument with my MIL about this lol, so looked up a ton of information). I second the nets if your worried. If you have baby stuff set up now, or when you do. Place tin foil on the bed, or anywhere they may go. A lot of cats don't like this one their claws and will deter them away, spray water. Also, firm NO's, and a little tap on the rear helps too

Get a cat net to be safe. We have 2 cats as well and one likes to be left alone (by strangers, not us) and the other is very curious but let me tell you - they are so not fussed about babies! I had my nephew here when he was a few days old and my older cat just sniffed the car seat and they both kept out his way. Cats don't usually care for things that can't give them attention and are loud!
