Disappointing appointment..some ?'s, I feel off track. (kinda long)

I went to the doctor today for my 31 week check up. I am now going every 2 weeks. I know thats pretty much common practice. The doctor just comes in and measures me (im at 33) and listens to the heartbeat (150 bpm) and then barely talks to me..i told him about some period like cramps, and he says "we could check your cervix..." then just trails off. Then he goes "Oh just some 3rd trimester stuff, whats ur plan for anesthesia?" I said that I would like to go as natural as possible, but I am also willing to have an epidural if I feel it needed...Then he just looked at me like I couldnt do it. Like I was a lunatic.

He also said to me "Dont go into labor..you have no history of pre-term labor.." THEN he made the extremely off color and hideous "joke" that "well you dont go into pre term labor necessarily.." I just looked at him in horror. Was that a F'ING JOKE?! He was commenting on my mulitiple miscarriages. I couldnt believe it. I have to put up with him because I cant find anyone in my area who will take me this late on in my pregnancy. IF this doctor can manage to come to my labor I am telling the nurse no thank you, I want the on call doctor, not this guy my insurance made me see.

So my ?'s are..when and will I be getting a growth scan?! Dr. never mentions it. He seems uninterested in me and my pregnancy. How can I talk to him to get some results in my care?? I dont know, I just feel off about this doctor

I will make remarks about him to my insurance company, and hopefully they take a look into it and scratch him off the recommendation list!! That would be about a 25% loss of patients! Hmmph! Take that!

Thank you for reading tho made me smile!

Wow, what a dick!! I'm sorry you can't change doctors, he sounds horrible! Can you request a second opinion even if you can't change doctors? If you have concerns, they shouldn't be ignored! And I absolutely can't believe his comment on preterm labor!!!

As for the growth scan, I'm not sure if you'll get one. I didn't get one (only had one scan at 18 weeks) and unless there's cause for concern I don't think you'll get one...but don't quote me! It depends on your doctor/clinic/hospital policy.

I think it's in your best interest to write a birth plan stating your wishes to try for a natural birth (and anything else!), make multiple copies, and take them with you to the hospital when you go into labor and give them to the NURSES, since it will be them who will take care of you most of the time. Do you take a tour of the L&D ward before you deliver? It wouldn't hurt to go in ahead of time and try to meet some of the nurses (take a few copies of your birth plan) and see if they can put some notes in your file about your wishes for labor. If you can, meet the anesthesiologist and explain to him/her your wishes, too. Your doctor actually doesn't do much during the birth, so it's good to meet as many of the other people who will be doing most of the work and get them on your side Good luck!

Your doctor sounds like a jerk. As for growth scans, I don't know if they do them this late. I never had any after the one around 18 weeks with either of my pregnancies. I'm in Canada. Maybe it's different in US?

Thank you! I will be doing a tour of the hospital! The birth plan sounds like a good idea. I was going to do one, but hadnt thought of the copies idea. I will do that! Thank you!

He sounds like a jerk! Sorry you are having to deal with him. My ob practice has a dr that I hate... He says horrible stuff as well. It's like they don't get that what they say is just horrible stuff especially for pregnant women to hear. I had an option of not dealing with that dr anymore though... But if he was on call for delivery I wouldn't have had a choice. I was lucky though and he wasn't on call until the day I was discharged. It was a pain enough dealing with him for that!

For the question on a growth scan.. My hospital doesnt do them unless you are measuring way off ( 2 ahead is normal they told me) or if you have other issues. I had growth scans as I have high bp which can make baby small. At one point during this last pregnancy I was measuring 3 1/2 weeks ahead but they did a growth scan worried about her being small. I had quite a lot of fluid vs big baby.

First, so sorry about your care at the doctor! I agree with what several of the other ladies have said....there's usually no routine growth scan after the 18-20 week scan unless there are complications or other diagnoses.....such as gestational diabetes, IUGR, previous complications, etc.

Best of luck to you...won't be long until you get to meet your little one .

Thank you-- I think we will book a private scan soon. I want some 3d/4d action also the techs that do those really seem to enjoy what they are doing, instead of acting like you are a big inconvience. :/ Doctors can be so annoying sometimes
