SA Results - advice please

Hi ladies,

This is my first post here so be gentle! OH and I have been trying for 8 months, this would be my 2nd and his 1st. We got an assessment done last week and got the results today:

Volume: 4ml
Count: approx 78 million
Mobility: 60% high/mid
Morphology: 4%

The Dr has advised that I go for testing as well but how bad are these results really? I don't really know what a 'normal' or 'good' result looks like and the Dr didn't give much comparison, apart from the fact that the morphology is low...but is it so low as to give us pretty much no chance? We're going to cut booze, switch to decaf coffee and OH takes Men's vitamins, will all this help?

Any advice you could give would be fab. Thank you so much!

Laura

Hi Laura! Honestly, when you read what other people have gone through with SA, anything is possible! I think your dh's count is excellent! As for the morphology; I can understand the concern. From what I've read, there seems to be 2 different types of morphology exam; one, is the WHO exam, which says that normal morphology should be over 30%, then there's the Kruger exam which is much more strict and says a normal morphology should be over 14%. I've read some women on here who have gotten pg on a 1% morphology! My own dh's morphology is 7% - no baby yet, but we're going to see a fertility doc next month. Anyway, my doctor says that (in your case) 4% of 78 million is still 3,120,000 - and you only need one! Try not to lose hope....I think your chances are excellent!

Best of luck!

Hi carreg,

My DH's result are very similar to that, his morphology is 5%, we have been ttc for 10 cycles now but i only have one tube, there is an article (i will try and find it) which suggests that new guidelines have been released saying that 5% morpology is normal !!! i will try and ind the link and put it on here for you to have a read.

My DH's morphology was 4%, motility 44%....it took us 16 cycles to pregnant. He cut out booze and started taking a vitamin reco'd my fertility specialist......we were just about to start cycle monitoring and I found out I was pregnant. So it does work. Morphology is a tricky thing. Who is to say what a "normal" sperm looks like. It's too reliant on the eye of the person examining it. I would say cut out booze, caffeine and start him on a multi as well as zinc.....and no hot showers.....a swim in cool water is always a good thing. It is possible honey. It happened for us.
The best of luck to you.....xx

Thank you everyone for the positivity and help

hopefulfor09 - that is really good to hear, thank you. We have been 2 weeks now with no caffeine or alcohol and with OH taking a male multivitamin (with carnitine, argenine, selenium, zinc etc in) and an extra zinc supplement, plus him eating less and going to the gym more to shift some of his extra weight so I really hope that it makes a difference for us.

Thanks again ladies

xxx
