Terrified about labour and needles.

I'm 18 and I terrified about giving birth but more so because of the drips and large needles (epidural) and and the duration and less for the actually pain.
I'm only 11 weeks but I feel like they are going to fly. The first bloo test I ever got was to see if my home test was true, and I have the biggest fear of needles.

Is anyone else like this?

When I had my first I had an epidural and this time around I plan on going natural. I'm not trying to scare you but i had severe back pain afterwards. I went without any meds till I was 7cm dialated and wish I would have just pushed through. There are other options if you want a natural birth like the birthing ball labouring in a tub walking around etc. Talk to your doc about it and see what he/she thinks.

Yes! I'm more scared of the epi and the needles then actually giving the birth, or ripping down there! And I'm down to only 11 weeks to prepare!!!!!!!

*We don't have gas & air in the states, it's pretty much all or nothing!

I don't mean to sound stupid or anything but, do you HAVE to have a drip? I'm the same as you Kaaatie and can't stand needles. I'm only wanting gas and air and possibly the birthing pool? xx

^ Not at all!! I did it with gas & air and a birthing pool, for both my children.

Epidural is an OPTION girls, I knew from day one NO WAY would I have it, and in fact i was so sure of that, I chose to have both my kids in a midwife led birthing centre where epidurals weren't even an option! I didn't have a drip, I was free to move around as I wanted.

To the OP - I replied properly to this post in labour and delivery But basically I have a phobia of needles, yet I got through 2 pregnancies, labours and births, with just 18 months between my two children. First I had at 18, second at 19.

^ They inject you with a smaller needle to numb you first. Then they put the epidural in. Apparently then you can feel it, but it doesn't 'hurt'. I'm not sure, I've not had it myself.

I'm like you, terrified of needles, I have such a big phobia of them. I hyperventilate and go mad its awful.. but my midwife is aware of it. I'd love to go to a midwife run centre, but apparently I'm going to a consultant-led one, but it looks very nice and it's new this year, so it doesn't bother me too much. I'm just going to write in my birth plan I dont want to be offered an injection medication x

I said i didnt want an epidural or anything with needles but really at the time you just dont care..
I had pethadine twice in my bum, an epidural that they upped twice, and a spinal injection and i cant even remember how they felt, i was completely gone! i had a canular too..
I wouldnt even worry.. I worried about lots, there were alot of things i didnt want to happen.. and it all happend.. Just be open minded
