Anybody else have a toddler who won't sleep?

No matter what I do, Livi just never wants to sleep at night. During the day she'll act tired, but at night she just pumps up with energy!

She doesn't have a late nap, or even a long nap, for that matter. She normally wakes up between 9 and 10:30, then normally naps between 12 and 2. She only naps for an hour and a half, maybe 2 if she was up real early and took a later nap.

She doesn't eat anything that would give her a lot of energy at night, so change in diet wouldn't help.

I'll sit there for hours trying to get her to sleep. She won't fall asleep on her own before midnight. She'll go to sleep before midnight, but only if she's snuggled up with me (or a very select few others) and even that's late (like 10pm) We usually start our snuggle sesh at about 9, sometimes she's out by 9:30, sometimes it's 10. But we co-sleep, so it doesn't really bother me as we're cuddled up anyway.

At first I felt like a failure, because I see everybody else saying "Oh my kid goes to bed at 7! 8pm is the latest!" True, but your kid also wakes up at the crack of dawn. Mine doesn't. She's never been an early riser. Even if she has a long day and goes to sleep at like 8:30, 9:00, she still won't wake up till 9 in the morning.

After doing some research, I found that sleep patterns are actually somewhat hereditary. None of the women in my family are early risers, they're all night owls. The men in my family, on the other hand, go to bed no later than 9:30 and wake up at 6 or 7 in the morning.

Anybody else struggle with a late nighter?

Oliver gets tired early, like half 6 at night he goes to bed. But he gets up between 7am and 8am most days. But I prefer it that way because I get a break in the evening and have more time to get everything done during the day.

My parents, grandparents, Aunties etc are all early risers, my brother and cousins are later at getting up in the morning. Probably because they are younger and lazier

I think I've found the trick! As odd as this is going to sound, I think she needs to nap later in the day. There are some days where she won't fall asleep for her nap until like 3:30-4:00, then she'll wake up about 5. Those are the nights she goes to bed without a problem at 10, as in on her own.

She's been feeling pretty poorly today, so she took a nap around 3:30 and slept till almost 5:30. I didn't have the heart to wake her as I knew she was feeling ill. Tonight we got in bed and within 10 minutes she was out.

I think tomorrow I'm going to try putting her down about 3:30 (so she'll wake up about 4:30-5:00) and see if she goes to bed easy again. All this time I've been trying to get her to nap early, but maybe she's getting over tired and therefore not going to sleep at night.
