Toddler humping? normal?

My 22 month old son has been doing this a while but its got more frequent and longer episodes of it so i thought i would see if anybody elses toddler did this or if i should be worried?

Its usually when he tired, he puts something between his legs, a teddy, cushion, quilt, babys clothes etc and humps making grunting noises.

It is funny to see i suppose but it's getting to be a obsession with him now and i cant break it. He has never seen me and his dad having sex or any sex on the tv so he isnt imitating anything he has seen.

This is very normal. We actually talked about this in one of my classes the other day. The best thing to do is to distract him by giving him something else to do. Don't discourage him because it might embarrass him just make clear that "these are things that you do in your room when you are alone, not in public or in front of people".

My daughter does this sometimes in her bed before she goes to sleep. I wonder if it's a sort of comforting or calming thing, especially if he's doing it when he's tired. My DD has never done it outside of her bed, so we've actually never said anything to her about it.

I have 3 boys, the youngest is 2 and I can tell you it is normal. Its all exploration and all he knows is that it feels nice. He probably discovered it quite by accident but remembered it so did it again. My older 2 who are 6 and 4 and obviously wear pants so find it easier to get to their bits will sit playing with it while watching telly. If I catch them I just ask them to put it away and say its not polite to get it out or touch it in front of everyone. If they want to play with it they can do so in their room. I don't say it in a telling off way or voice, and when I do tell them off I don't send them to their room so they wont get the impression they are being told off for it or that its wrong. But will hopefully learn to leave it alone in company LOL

My son does this all the time, he unfortunately likes to do it on OH's and my legs whenever he gets the chance. When he starts, I try to distract him which works for a bit but he soon starts again. I hope he'll grow out of it soon and I will be able to explain to him that whilst it's OK to do it in private, humping your mothers leg in public is not what you want to be doing!

Thanks for this post. My son has started doing this recently I knew not to discourage but I'm not sure how to explain only to do it in his bed as I don't think he'll understand. No one tells you about this kind of stuff. Argh
