How long should a 14 month old nap for?

Just wondering really as my LO doesnt sleep well at night and I am wondering if this is due to him napping too long during the day? He usually only has one nap around midday and sleeps usually between 1 - 2 hours. In addition to that there is the odd time he will fall asleep when in the car or pram but I try my best to keep him awake at other times.

Thanks,

Sarah

Its probably another one of those individual things. Sidney naps either once or twice a day, depending on when he wakes up and what he's been doing. He goes to bed ok (some time between 7.30 and 9 depending on naps) and usually sleeps through, unless he's ill. Xx

Thanks for your reply! We had a busy day yesterday and Ruari only slept for 30 mins and last night was the first time he has slept through so it got me wondering!

Congratulations on baby no 2 xx

My daughter is 15 months old now. She usually has two naps per day of 1-2 hours each however we aren't religious about it and if we are busy we will happily miss a nap.You can tell she has missed one though because she will be extra moany before bedtime. She is in bed by 7.30 each night and sleeps until 7 a.m. I think its an individual thing and also depends on what they are used to. Sleep is supposed to promote sleep though in kids of this age and the more they have the better they sleep ... or so they say!

Isabelle has one nap a day now, of an hour and a half. She's just transitioned down from two naps. She does get a bit moany between 6 to 7pm but she goes straight to sleep at 7 whereas before she would often be up late as she wasn't tired.

As pp have said though it is very much an individual thing.

It depends on your child. At 14 months my eldest would sleep for 13 hours over night and 3 hours during the day. If he only had 1 hour during the day then he would then sleep less at night too!!

My youngest though was sleeping 11 hours at night and maybe 1 hour during the day. At around 18/20months she started sleeping 2hours during the day and up to 12 hours at night.

I think the problem might actually be the opposite...too little sleep. Sleep begets sleep My son is 16mo old and most days he gets up between 7-8am then he's ready for a nap about 10:30am and sleeps at least 1.5hrs. He takes another nap about 3:30 for about the same amount of time. Then he goes to bed at 8pm. So he's getting around 12hrs at night and a minimum of 3hrs during the day. If he doesn't sleep long enough during the day his night sleep is really bad. He gets overtired and has a hard time falling asleep and then also has a hard time staying asleep.

Since he has 3 older brothers who are in school we are running around a lot so some days he can only get one nap. On those days he goes to sleep no later than noon and then will sleep almost 3hrs.

My 13 month old sleeps about 11 hours at night and 3 hours in the day. Usually she takes one middle of the day nap, but sometimes she does 2 hour and a half instead. If she doesn't get that sleep, she's soooooo cranky! She goes to bed very easily at night, so it seems perfect for now.

Blimey I sound really harsh in comparison! Our boy wasn't sleeping until about nine or ten pm so since then we limit his naps in the day to 1 hour 15 and now he sleeps so well from 7.30-7 am. But maybe I'm being a cruel mummy as we do wake him as we found thy he would happily sleep for three hours on the day and then be up so late. x
