19 month old not settling at bedtime !!!!!

My 19 month old no longer settleseasily at bed time. He constantly screams when we leave him. It is the same at nap times in the day too. Not sure what I can do about this. He wants to be close to us, and eventually settles if either myself or dh are in the room. We have just put him into a toddler bed, but he was like this when he was in the cot. Is it ok to stay in th room untill he falls asleep ??????

When he is asleep, he usually sleeps through.

Any advice would be appreciated. xxx

I think I'd just try to get him used to you being further and further away whilst within the room tbh. It's really tough because he's at an age where you don't want to put him back in the cot (and I know i couldn't stand the crying anyway) but he's not old enough really for you to explain too much (or at least, I know my son wouldn't understand if I tried to explain to him, at 23 months). It's fabulous that he usually sleeps through! My son would always go off perfectly but didn't sleep through on a regular basis until nearly 22 months!

We ended up bringing him downstairs last night, as he was really screaming and wouldn't settle. He looked at me with a, I'm olaying you up look, kinda tugging at his clothes. With the widest grin you could imagine. We gave a 2 minute warning before bed, put him in his bed and firmly said " Bed time Malakai ", and he dropped straight off, and slept through till morning. Little monkey !!!!!

I love how they can't hide they're being complete monkeys at this age! My son occasionally wanders into my room crying and gets into my bed and I think 'oh whatever, I'm too tired!' then he starts singing and talking and I realise he doesn't want comfort, he wants to mess about! and I do the 'right boyo, back to bed for you!' thing lol.

Does he have a comfort item? sounds like he maybe needs some kind of comfort when going to sleep, which doesnt have to be you.
My boy has a taggy blanket he snugles with to sleep.

He has a toy dog which he has been attached to for ages lol!!! It's a curtain tie back really !!!!!! I did wonder whether to put something in with my sent on ????????

He had a major screaming fit when I left him just now. So I went in the room. stroked his head a little, and he was drifting off. The phone then rang, so I left him. He started crying again, but by the time I answered it he was quiet. I checked on him a couple of minutes later, and he was asleep. xxx

We do siminlar with Alex, he will always cry when he self settles so we leave him to it. I know if he wants something from the type of cry so i know whether to go in or not.
