Eating problems

Hi everyone

I'm having problems when my LO eats. He does chew, but I think the problem is that he doesn't chew properly. Possibly because he still has no back teeth. But I noticed when we were at playgroup this morning he was the only one coughing and spluttering as he ate. I'm still on edge every time I give him something to eat as I think he's going to choke. Although if it does get to that point, he usually vomits.

Does anyone else have this problem? He's nearly 18 months now so I was kinda hoping he'd have learnt how to eat by now

I have a sort-of-similar problem with one of my twins.... she will only eat "finger food" such as sandwiches, if they are cut into cm squares (honestly) as she can't be bothered to bite a piece off, and if I give her a chunk of banana for instance, she tries to swallow it whole, and has done so on occasion, not pleasant for her or me! She's only really happy when she's being spoonfed something soft like shepherds pie / yoghurt / etc.
I say "can't be bothered" because I know she CAN do it, she has eaten things bite by bite before now but seems to have decided that it's too much effort, *sigh*.
I don't know whether it's better to keep making them try, or to chop things up tiny til they seem more ready, but at the moment I'm doing a bit of both... hope it's just a phase!

Have exactly same issue - Riya loves to be spoon fed, mushy soft things, but even then doesn't eat so much. She only has 4 teeth though so I guess she can't chew properly yet, so I'm happy to chop stuff for her still.

He might have a very sensitive gag reflex, in which case he should improve soon with eating because it moves back as they get older so isn't activated so often.

Teeth are not an issue, Ruby ate normal family meals no problem with only her tooth bottom teeth for ages! They don't need teeth to chew.

mylos a nightmare for feeding.. he can quite happily eat chips but wont eat anything else remotely solid apart from the odd crisp out of my packet.
He prefers baby food.. or homemade mushed up in a spoonfed way.

I hope he changes soon.
I keep giving him bits of cheese.. toast, fruit, he just chucks it all on the floor.. My dogs Are getting FAT!
