Is this just a phase?

My 20 month old is such a whinge at the moment!...Not all the time, just when he wants something he can't get.

I know that he can't express himself properly yet and ask for things, but does he really have to scream and whinge when his ball is stuck behind the sofa, or he can't reach the book off the sofa, or there's no juice left in his cup!!

Do people understand what I mean?

Anyone got any solutions? He didn't used to be like this, I'm trying to only let him have stuff and I say stop crying/whinging, it's only then I will give it to him, but alot of the time it doesn't work as he has no idea what I'm asking for. Aaargh it's a frustraiting age for both of us!!!

Charlie did that for a while, for example getting his toy stuck somewhere or not being able to find his cup or whatever - I just say to him 'go on you can do it yourself, you're really clever' then gave him a big cheer when he did, cos he usually could! Constant boundary testing at this age I think.

It's a tough age because they're not quite 'talking' as such so they get frustrated when they can't tell you what they want. When he starts whinging and you know what it's for say 'would you like a drink of juice Tom?' and if it is what he wants then say the sentence 'tom would like juice, clever boy for telling mummy!' so he can start telling you when he can say it. If you don't know why he's whinging ask him to show you then do the same as above. Hope this helps, it's tough being a mummy isn't it? Lol xxx

Thanks for the advice,

I think asking him questions when he gets like that, to encourage him to express himself is best.

It is a very frustraiting age though, for both of us! (Prob him more though!)
