Good idea for a thread! We are worried that our son might have asthma, but apparently is too young to diagnose.

When did your LO get a diagnosis?

We've been told we're too young to diagnose too, but the doctor said to keep coming back and he will treat it as asthma. I don't quite understand why they won't diagnose at this age if the doctor knows it needs treating as asthma.

Harveysmum369- you've said your son has now been officially diagnosed with asthma. When he was younger around 18months what symptoms was he having that led you and your doctor to think and treat it for asthma?

For you other ladies what are you seeing that is leading you and your doctors to treat for asthma and think it is asthma?

The reason I ask these questions is I have a stepson who is too young to diagnose with asthma at this point we are told. But he is being treated for asthma and taking a puffer twice a day every day, but my fiancé and I don't necessarily think it is asthma as we aren't, and have never, seen any asthma related symptoms. So we're just looking for more infomation. Maybe the symptoms are different in hunger children? Maybe we're right and it really isn't asthma? We just don't know ( there is very little to zero communication on his moms part to us so it's hard to get any information out of her on the particular subject)

Have you been told of any negative affects later in life for them taking a puffer twice a day every day when it isn't needed?
Have any of your toddlers been put on puffers twice a day as treatment? Is that normal?

Thanks ladies!

My son (almost 1 year) was given a diagnosis of asthma last month. He had some bad wheezing, and was given a breathing treatment right there in the pediatrician's office. Holy scary!!!

We now have Albuteral syrup to give as needed for coughs, etc. This seems to really help. We also run the humidifier when his breathing gets a bit rough.

Definitely no fun!

Did the wheezing start for no reason? Was it quite clear he wasn't breathing effectively?

......see my stepson has none of that! Even after running around like crazy or his dad throwing him up in the air continually until he's laughing hysterically or after he's been tickled to where he's laughing super super hard he's never had any trouble breathing!

No, the wheezing happened when he caught RSV. He was also put on antibiotics for an upper respiratory infection and ear infection. It was definitely clear that his breathing was impaired. You could hear it in his chest, especially when he was drinking his bottles.

He had some wheezing last week and I took him in again. The doctor said that he just a virus this time and to use the albuteral syrup to help control the coughing.

Ben can play like a mad man, and he never wheezes. It only seems to happen when he gets some kind of virus or bug.

Also - I LOVE my son's doctor. He use to work in the Cardiologist Ward in Hershey Medical Center, PA. I feel he's top notch. He doesn't mess around, and gave him the breathing treatment right then and there.

xo

Hmmmmm.
When my stepson gets sick he does get a really mucusy type cough and deffinately sounds like his lungs are mucusy too....but not really trouble breathing. Sounds more just like the usual cold type symptoms of a yucky chest cold. and never any wheezing.

Lauralu- does he only take medication when he's sick and having the symptoms? Or has your doctor prescribed that he takes them every day regardless?

Thanks so much for the information!

im glad this thread was made..ive never had anyone to talk to about this because i dont know anyone with kids..and google scares me!

when i was in labor my son had swallowed maconium, he was sent to NICU for 2 weeks because he had trouble breathing..he had lots of rattling and crackling noises..finally he looked good enough to go home, when he was 1 month old we started seeing lung specialist and getting lots of xrays because the noise would not go away..at 2 months i started the nebulize and worked with him but it didnt not help, finally at 5 months we go inhaulers but also they did not work...hes now 12 months old and i still worry about his crackly lungs..

the noises come and go..and then he gets like Flem in his throat..also since he was born he has had a runny noise! and i mean every single day! i am worried just worried about him constantly, but aside from this he is a happy healthy boy..the dr says hes even ahead for his age...

so does anyone else have similar conditions with their little one?
