Potty Training Help - is he ready?

On Friday for the first time ever my little boy weed on the potty. I decided to take the opportunity to start potty training.

He went without a nappy most of Friday. Only one accident and he took himself to the potty without prompting twice.

Saturday was equally as good. 3 accidents, a poo on the potty (an amazing step though I caught him mid poo and he finished on the potty) and he used the potty for wees of his own accord several times.

Today we tried pants, more accidents have happened. He hasn't taken himself to the potty at all, every wee has been prompted/caught by us. He still enjoyed his sticker reward though and was enthusiastic. After his nap he woke a bit grumpy. Didn't want to take his trousers off. Anyway, we went to MIL's for dinner. Took potty, didn't expect much in a strange house. After dinner we took his nappy off (he'd pooed) and he immediately weed on the floor. He had his nappy off for another hour but didn't wee.

So, does he sound ready? I'm not going to stay in evey day until he's dry as he wouldn't enjoy that. I also don't want to put him off potty training by constantly asking if he needs a wee!

Help!!

It sounds like he is very interested. i started with my dd at 18months, she was at the similar stage as your little boy so decided to go for it! It took a good 2months for her to be completly dry. I would ask her every 2 hours if she needed a wee. When i look back now she led the way i just stoped putting the nappies on. I think the key is to decide and go for it dont confuse them by putting nappies back on. Lucie has a nappy for bed and long car journeys! When out and about its all about timings. My best memory of potty training was when i was in the kitchen washing up next thing i hear lucie shouting mummy i walk in to find she had done a poo on her potty to then pick it up to give to me, i then had to think of how to react. So i praised her for using her potty but she didnt need to bring it to me. Hope any of this helps.

I think he sounds like he is ready. I would just go for it and switch to pants full time as I think it is just confusing for them switching between nappies and pants. I told Thomas that nappies were just for sleeping and he only wore them for naps and bedtime. I don't think you need to stay in all the time, just bring a couple of changes of clothes just in case and nappy bags to put wet clothes in. I don't think you need to ask them if they need to go all the time either, just maybe encourage him to go or bring him to the potty every two hours or so if he has been dry for that time. Accidents do happen but it's no big deal really and they do learn from the accidents too.

Some good advice here, Pops...wish I could add to it, but we are in the same boat, as you know! One step...wee or poo...at a time

Thanks everyone!

Polaris, we tried with just pants while out yesterday and he wet through twice. Today though he's used the potty of his own initiative 3 times. We went to our Auntie's farm which is a 30 min drive. Whilst we were there (about an hour and a half after leaving home) he was crossing his legs, saying he wanted to go home for the potty. We went in to the house, I sat him on the toilet and he did a wee His nappy was dry too!!!

So, I'm trying not get too excited but I think he's starting to "get it". I think I'll stop with pants for a few more days and see how dry his nappy stays before trying again. At home he's always without a nappy as he was having accidents at home with pants too.

One step at a time but I'm very proud of him

We still have accidents most days because Riley wont tell us when he needs to go. We have managed to be completely dry for a few days now though. I would say dont push it. Maybe try training pants for a few weeks so if you do go out and he has an accident its not embarassing for him. I found letting Riley pick his own pants helped because he really wanted to wear and use the toilet to keep them clean
