Nursery trips out

My DS is due to move up to 3-5s unit at his nursery and today I got his information pack which included a consent form for him to go on trips to the forest school. Its about 12 miles away and they go on the nursery mini bus.

Im really not comfortable with it. Apart from my OH I never let anyone drive DS and the thought of him going off for trips really freaks me out !!!

The other issue is when they go on trips you have to fit the car seat in the mini bus. Im not happy to do this as I find it really hard to secure the seat in my own car let alone anyone elses. I don't want to keep messing about putting it in and out.

I think they go a lot to this forest school so I will feel under pressure to let him go if all the other children do but I know I will be so stressed about him going in a vehicle driven by someone else.

Am I being silly, has anyone else had the same issue?

Oooh I can totally see why you wouldn't be happy with this, I don't think I would be either. Especially if it's fairly regularly. It's an awkward situation isn't it and I guess it's the start of things to come, but I would feel quite worried. Also, at this age, it seems quite a distance to go for them really. x

I'm not sure I'd be that happy with the mini bus thing either esp the car seat thing. When I opened your thread I was expecting you to say they go trips to the park or somewhere local on foot.

With my daughters previous nursery they quite often went on trips out in a coach and every week she had a swimming lesson which the nursery staff had to drive them to. She has changed nurseries now because we moved house and there is a trip tomorrow but I am going on the coach with her ( as are most parents ) Is this something that could be arranged to put your mind at rest ?

I wouldn't be happy about it either though I would love the idea of him going to the forest school. 12 miles on a coach is a long way for someone else to drive him - I am probably am very overprotective but like you, I don't let anyone drive him anywhere except for myself or DH.

Personally I would either see if you could go with them to see what its like. If that's not possible then I wouldn't give permission and they would then have to find something alternative for him to do at the nursery in that time.

Thanks everyone.

He only does part time hours at the moment so I'm hoping to get round it somehow but in September his hours will increase. I have every faith in the staff caring for him at the forest school as it is at the home of the nursery owner its just the actual journey there and back.

I am not a great passenger when other people are driving so the thought of him going off on a minibus with only a handful of adults fills me with dread.

I'm not sure if I could go with him and I would more than likely be working anyway. It is a big nursery so i'm hoping that he won't be the only one not going.

our nursery is organising a trip to a farm - my lo will be 2 and I will be going too so I can drive her in her car seat and look after her when they are there - I dont want her stuck in a double buggy and not be able to see anything

could you not book a days holiday ?

I understand your reluctance but it will be exciting for him to see and do new things. Maybe you could spend a couple of hours at the weekend getting to grips with installing your car seat so you feel confident doing it and go with him the first time to hopefully put your mind at ease. You could also ask lots of questions about what the staff do to ensure the safety of the little ones on the bus. Good luck.
