watching tv

I'm about to ban tv during the week days. At least for a little while. I think my LO is a completely different person when she watches tv in the evenings. She's more cranky and cries more.

Anyone elses LO like this?

I don't let Thomas watch TV because I don't like the effect that it has on him. His eyes sort of glaze over and he goes into a trance and won't interact with me at all. He also gets over-stimulated very easily since he was a baby. We actually don't have a TV in the house currently. I do let him watch the odd youtube video or the odd episode of Peppa on the laptop but not often, usually just when I need him to sit still for a while e.g. for cutting fingernails or haircuts. The only time he really watches for long is if he's ill.

We have banned tv for the week and made a movie night on the weekend. LO was getting too demanding that he wanted to watch this and he wanted to watch that so I had to put my foot down.

Now that he is poor, rules seemed to have vanish as I'm happy when he does anything other than sleeping.

We don't have a tv either, and until quite recently, Alice never watched any programmes. I started letting her watch Abney and Teal, frankly to give me a break as being pregnant has made me exhausted, but she was always harder to deal with afterwards. I think if you can, it's better to avoid TV for little ones.

I've never been a fan of lo's watching tv so we don't tend to have it on at home. Daniel watches the odd thing on dvd or on iplayer but that is it. He does tend to watch tv when he's at my in laws house on a saturday morning and he is definitely more hyper after watching tv.
If he does watch tv in an evening at home he is harder to settle down than usual.
Esther doesn't ever watch the tv so i've no idea how it affects her or if it does.

Ihsan has always watched a little tv here and there. If i switch it off he doesn't bother and never asks for it to be on. He would rather run around. He mostly watches it whilst eating breakfast and before his bath at night, I have noticed no difference in his behaviour whether he watches tv or not unless he very is tired. I absolutely never let him watch tv around his nap time then he gets too hard to settle. If I thought tv was having a negative effect on him I would definately stop letting him watch it though

When Aisling's at home, we might watch the Gruffalo the odd time but thats it, she's never had Cbeebies or anything like that on in our house. I know does watch some at the childminder's house but so far as I know (or am told!) it's about 30 minutes a day which I can live with. I haven't noticed much of a behaviour change in her, I was more so concerned about constant demands to have it on. Because she's now used to it not really ever being on, she'll ask for the Gruffalo every now and then but is pretty easily distracted to something else and she thankfully doesn't ask for any other programmes, mainly because she doesn't realise they exist!

I don't mind TV. We have it on in the mornings from about 8 until 9.30 and its only so I can bath the younger baby and get her dressed. It doesn't bother him so much though, in fact a lot of times he asks me to turn it off as a show is annoying him

Our problem lies with our frickin iPad. I've had to hide it on him. We used it a lot this week as all of us were sick. He was sick, then the baby was sick and then I was sick, so it was useful at the time to keep him entertained whilst I was busy cleaning up sick or being sick myself! It turned him into a little monster though - he cried for it, demanded it, threw himself on the floor for it. I ended up hiding it in OH's sock drawer, and there it will remain. I hate the way it makes him unresponsive to me. Yes, we have good educational apps and he learns a lot, but when a little person gets that demanding of something, you know its time to take it away for a while :/

Ohhhh we suffer from the iPad problem too!! We too hide it and try to limit when he can use it...but it is such a pain as it means we cant use it either unless he is in bed. I even have to try to hide using it in the kitchen if I am trying to cook n follow a recipe from it!!

I haven't had it out since yesterday. Think I will also only have to use it at night from now on or like you, hide it on the worktop whilst I'm cooking! He likes my OH's iphone too so hubby has had to hide it now as well (angry birds). He doesn't go near my iphone as I have nothing of interest to him, except pictures of himself
