Reasurance this is normal :)

My 22 month old is not happy with ANYTHING at the moment.

day goes

wake up - usually happy

plays happily for about 10 mins then toys thrown about in frustration

go out in the garden to play, happy for 5 mins then throwing stuff again

go out in the car - major tantrum to get him in

does not get telly on - major tanturm

and on it goes, tantrums range from about 3-8 per day. Most usually mild but one or two big scale

Tell me I am not alone, and this is normal for a nearly 2 year old

Totally normal for this age.

People think my son is really well behaved, but his most likely tantrum time is when I am making dinner so the only people who get to see that are me, and H if he is at home. I think this is because he sees I am busy, wants attention so has a paddy to get it.

I try to pre-empt his tantrums and distract him quickly if I see him getting frustrated before he gets to the tantrum stage and it works most of the time.

For instance when we are going in the car I ask him to get in and turn on the CD for me (at the moment he has Bob the Builder) and let him pretend to drive the car whilst I load the bags etc, then I put him in his seat- so the days of him trying to run off down the street are gone!

When I am making the dinner I ask him to do little jobs like choose the vegetables to go with dinner, get me a bowl/plate for his food, put cuttlery on the table, add things to the pan (if it isn't too hot)....

He seems to love helping Mummy meaning that he rarely tantrums. I am also working on getting him to sign/say help instead of making a whingy noise if he can't do something and it works 9 times out of 10.
