preconception check up question

Hi ladies I am wondering how many of you had a preconception check up and if you went to a gyn or your family dr. I usually get my yearly paps done by my family dr I have never been to just a gyn- I have been trying for baby for 6 months now with no results, so I figured it's time to see a dr just in case there is something really obvious that is keeping me from becoming pregnant. Plus I keep reading how it's good to get a preconception check up. Well I called my dr office and they were soo confused as to why I wanted to come in. They actually said they will call me back after asking my dr..Maybe general practice drs do not do these sort of things?

Hi There

Is there a reason you to a GP and not an obgyn? I suggest possibly going to an obgyn, since this is their dedicated field and they will be able to discuss in detail what conception is like, the process and know exactly what tests to run. They will put you on prenatals, etc. A GP is a good overall doc, but you need to see a specialist.

Thanks for replying! No real reason I just never thought to go to an obgyn when my GP could do the paps I never gave it a thought until now..I guess for my next yearly check up I will get in with an obgyn. I don't know if I can just call a random obgyn in the area and ask for a preconception check up...

Hi apple25! I went to my gyno and asked her a bunch of questions about ttc, pregnancy, and what her role would be through pregnancy and what would the role of the general doctor be. My lady was super helpful, answered all my questions and more, and told me what I need to be taking for vitamins. I went to her about it because she will be the one who helps me deliver. I did see my regular doctor and asked her some questions, but what she told me and what the gyno told me were very different, so I'm listening to the gyno as I feel like she is the expert on this.

Also, it was the first time seeing my gyno. I used to go to a man but with trying to get pregnant I really wanted to go to a woman as I want to feel 100% comfortable with who I'm seeing and asking questions too, and I wasn't with the man. Even if it's not time for your annual, start looking for a gyno now because I found a lot of them had a wait. And if you want to ttc soon, you can schedule an annual with your new gyno and ask them all the preconception questions during that visit. That's my 2 cents anyways... Good luck

I went to my gyno for my annual pap and then just asked them all my questions and let them know I was trying to conceive. I'd def recomend going to the gyno! They also reasured me that even tho most women think they are going to get pregnant right away, it most of the time takes up to a year. Even after reading that a million places it still made me feel happy to hear it from a doctor. Good luck to you!

Hi, I went to my regular GP and she ran all the fertility testing. I highly recommend getting her to test your OH too at the same time, then atleast you'll know if there is anything to look into. If there is any kind of fertility issue then your GP can refer you to a specialist for help.
Good luck!!

The reason why I went to the ob/gyn is because 1 I wanted to get checked out and get the go ahead. 2 I wanted to establish a relationship with and OB doc so when I do get PG I will have a dr that I know and trust. 3 If he/she is not compatible with what my needs and wants are then I know in advance and can look for another doc, BEFORE I am PG.

Imagine the stress of being pregnant and having to change docs because half way through your pregnancy you realize he does not share the same ideas that you do about your ideal delivery. I know someone who had to do this because the doc would not let her 8 y/o daughter be in the delivery room.
