High Prolactin levels, anyone?

I had a day 21blood test last month and my appointment with my GP showed that I have high prolactin levels and I'm not ovulating. My chart for last month did show ovulation but the blood tests say I didn't.

I only had a 8/9 day LP so by the time I got the appointment with my GP I was already CD5 again. He said that I need to now have a day3 test, what will that be looking for?
I can't have it until my next cycle and that will be ages away as my last cycle was 63 days and I'm still only cd26

What will be done to sort this out? He said if I have another 60+ day cycle then he will refer me straight to the fertilty specialist, what will the FS do?

Sorry for all the questions, I can never get the answers I need by googling things lol

Hi there

Not sure the circumstances are the same, but I was diagnosed with high prolactin levels about 8 years ago.

I came off the combined pill due to raised blood pressure and got concerned when my periods hadn't started up after three months. My GP did blood tests and found raised prolactin due to a benign growth on my pituitary gland, causing it to produce hormones it shouldn't be producing.

I've taken tablets ever since, which have shrunk the growth, lowered my prolactin to normal levels and re-started my periods/cycles. I'll be coming off it soon though as just found out that I'm PG with #1 (Will need monitoring during pregnancy to check that my levels don't rise too much).

I guess my situation was a bit different, as I didn't have any periods at all for about six months, until I got sorted with my meds. I'm not sure what the day 3 blood test will be looking for, or what other potential causes there are for high prolactin (besides the natural rise during pregnancy/breastfeeding of cause), but just thought I'd share my experiences.

Hope you soon get the answers you are looking for and that it get sorted out.

Tigs xx

For starters, day 21 tests are useless unless you ovulate on CD14. If your chart says you ovulated much later than CD14 then the blood test will have been done too early. This winds me up so much! I can't tell you how many CD21 tests I've had done and they keep telling me I'm not ovulating, but I do. Just late. It's a useful starting off point, but unless they follow up with weekly blood tests to check for ovulation they are not going to know if you are truly ovulating or not. It just doesn't add up because I've been told doctors consider 26-35 days a normal cycle length. So say you have a 35 day cycle with a 14 day LP, 35-14 = 21! So you would be ovulating the day of your test, but you get told you don't ovulate, which leads to much stress, upset and unnecessary drugs in some cases! Yet 90% of docs don't test beyond CD21.

Anyway, off my high horse! Re high prolactin - I was also diagnosed with this just before I was diagnosed with PCOS. There are varying degrees. For me, it's not really been a problem. Unfortunately having higher prolactin levels can delay and disrupt ovulation. I had to have an MRI scan to check the size of your pituitary gland. Luckily mine was only slightly enlarged so they said it was nothing to worry about. However, one of my mum's friend has to have an op on her pituitary gland pretty much every year because it's that bad. I don't want to worry you, but just to let you know it can really vary a lot, and hopefully with a few more tests you'll soon know how bad it is. I have heard that agnus castus can be good for high prolactin levels, also vit b6 and zinc x

Hi, I did do the test at 7dpo
I did alot of research and I decide to do it 7 days after FF said I ovulated not on day 21. I just called it that so people knew what test I was talking about

I am taking VitB at the moment, 50mg a day. So I hope it does something for me this month.

Thanks! I'm due around mid August - only 5 weeks at the mo, so very early days.

Smiler82 reminded me - I had an MRI scan too which found the pituitary growth. I have scans every year or so now, just to check all is ok. Mine was only a very small growth (micro-prolactinoma) so no surgery or anything needed, just the tablets.

Hope you get some more tests, and some answers, soon

Tigs xx
