Thyroid Issues and no AF for 10 months

Hi Everyone

I'm new to all this and wondered if anyone could give me any advice.
I came off the cilest pill in December so me and my husband can start to ttc and have not had a period since, I went to the doctors who did the normal bloods and sent me for an ultrasound scan.

I have now been diagnosed with an underactive thyriod (my TSH is 7.0 is this high?) and put on Levothyroxine but only 25mg, Ive got to go back soon for more tests to try and get the level right to bring it within the normal TSH range.

I just wondered if anyone has had similar stories and how long it took to have a period once the thyroxine was at the correct level? Also I've been using OPK's and I don't think I'm ovulating, I've never had a positive for the last couple of months!

I'm sorry if this has been answered somewhere already on the site, I did try to find this first.

Thanks xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hi love,

I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid at the age of 15. 25mcg is a very low dose of levothyroxine so I wouldn't worry too much.(although they are probably starting you at a low dose and working their way up according to your bloodtests) I am currently taking 150mcg but it has varied over the years, when I was pregnant with my 3rd child I was increased to 300mcg daily.

Did your gp say that your thyroid problem was causing lack of periods? I must say I have never lost my periods. I hope you get back within the normal range soon love, it shouldn't take that long, maybe a couple of months x

I went for CD3 blood test and all was good except for Thyroid which was unusual low - I'm being referred to a gyno, but I'm still waiting for the appointment so I can't give you any info yet - But I'm on the case. And when I get there I will ask questions.

Thanks for your responses xxxxxx

Yes the doctor thinks I've not had a period because of my thyroid being underactive, I think it might be a combination of being on the pill for so long (10 years) and also the thyroid issue.

Fingers crossed I get it sorted in the next couple of months and my periods come back at least I can then start to guess when I'm ovulating, it's just really frustrating!!

Hiya Tierney

I too am underactive and i have been for about 15 yrs now. Im on 100mcg daily and have been on that since being diagnosed. Ive never had any problems with my periods and ive never missed any. Maybe as u say it cud be a combination of the pill and the thyroid. Have to agree 25mcg is a small dose and maybe that is not high enuff to kick start ur cycle im not sure.

Good luck anyway and i hope u get urself sorted xxxx

Honey, I had graves (overactive) and had my thyroid removed in dec 2006.

If your levels are still low then you won't be ovulating so worth getting booked in for bloods as soon as. It can be sorted and if your levels are still low once they increase them you'll be back on track.

hope things sort themselves out.

We'll I can't believe it, I posted this thread on Monday about me not having a period for 10 months and low and behold AF came on Wednesday night, It's a bit strange at the moment though one minute its bright red the next dark brown sorry tmi! and I have really bad cramps.
I'm just so excited that it has finally turned up and I can now start ttc properly and hopefully now I will ovulate and get a positive opk!!
