Hi Jowling -
I also have Hypothyroidism - was diagnosed about 5 years ago. It does run in my family...both my mom and grandmother had it.

Some of my symptoms included slight hair loss, fatigue, and trouble LOSING weight, (even though I was working out like crazy 5 days a week) - also I was cold all the time! My OB also found some nodules on my thyroid gland and then I got a blood test.

Once diagnosed, hypo is very easy to control. I take .75 mcg of Synthroid every morning - at the same time - and then wait about an hour to eat anything. It's important to have your levels tested regularly to make sure the dosage of meds is appropriate. Once you conceive, your doctor should check your levels more often as pregnancy/hormone changes can effect the thyroid.

Good luck to you!!!

Please go see your doctor before retaking your meds and TTC.

For us who are Hypo (underactive) we take a med to increase the thyroid hormone - which doesnt harm a baby because it's a supplement to what our body already makes.

For those who are Hyper (over active) we take meds to kill part of the thryoid hormones in our body so that it decreases the amount of hormone we are absorbing. This can harm a baby. A doctor can give you meds which will not harm a baby or other supplements that you should be taking that are safe.

In addition, they'll check your levels. I had a goiter 10 years ago and they removed part of my thyroid - I was hypo and needed additional supplements, which i took for abt 2 years. In the last 3 months I have now swung over to the hyper side of the levels for no known reason, and I have not taken any meds yet. It's really a plan between you and your physician. So if you are hyper, def see your doctor Good luck!!
Oh yes! I was just going to point all of this out!
Hyperthyroid is a COMPLETELY and TOTALLY different thing than Hypo!!
With Hypo is perfectly fine to take the meds, they are harmless and are just synthetic hormones. BUT with HYPER, we are talking a VERY different ballpark! Those meds can be very dangerous to an unborn baby (as can not taking anything at all)! Though, the drug of choice while TTC and pregnancy is PTU (it still has risk in it, but you have to do what you have to do!) I just wanted to mention that because it doesn't work both ways just because its fine to take the meds with Hypo doesn't make it the same as with Hyper! But obviously you need them because its not safe to not take them!

but i see that you have figured out your low and not high- which is GREAT news! If i had my pick, i would be hypo over hyper ANY day of the year!!

Please, don't stop taking your medication. The thyroid plays a big part in fertility. If you have too much hormones then the medication takes away. It plays a big part in fertility.

I suffer from Hypothyroidism and I'm TTC. I'm on Metformin and I'm still on my thyroid medication. It's important that you continue your medication in order to boast your fertility.
