Ok - I might not have this exactly right but I think it's to do with preventing spina bifida.

Certianly been told it's very important.

Thank you... I meant to ask the doctor what it was for but we then got onto discussing my B12 injections so was waylaid!

I read that if you're eating enough foods with folic acid, taking more can mean too much which can also be dangerous. I view vitamins of any kind as a way to replace nutrients we don't get through food, and if I eat the right foods, I don't find them needed. But always talk to your doctor...

I take folic acid and have done since early 2010 & during my TTC journey.

If you are in the UK you can get them from holland and Barrets or most supermarkets.

Yes absolutely. There are a few ladies here on BnB that have children born with spina bifida and have lots of good information about the importance of folic acid.

I've never heard this. Could I ask what you've read, and what the dangers were said to be?

It is true that vitamin supplements are not a substitute for a healthy diet in most respects, but I do believe that taking folic acid when trying to conceive falls outside of this advice and is one of the few vitamin supplements that all doctors recommend.

In the UK the dept. of Health specifically recommends it and say on the NHS website " it would be almost impossible to get enough folic acid just from food; the only way to be sure you are getting the right amount is by taking a supplement.
