TTC and Prenatal Vitamins

Hi Ladies, just wondering what your opinion is on taking prenatal vitamins when trying to conceive. Is it a good idea? Bad idea? Doesn't matter?

I'm currently taking a regular women's multivitamin but I'm thinking of switching to prenatal in the hopes that it will help me with conception next month if i get a this month.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

It's important to take folic acid because the neural tube (to do with spina bifida) is developing very early on in the pregnancy, likely even before you know you're pregnant.

I'm taking folic acid just on the off chance I get pregnant!

I've been taking prenatals for months now, and even though it hasn't "helped me conceive", they can still prepare your body for a healthy early pregnancy. So in hopes, I continue to take them I don't think it really matters, but I'm for it!

I think you should definitely switch to prenatals...the often have more folic acid than normal vitamins, and that's the most important thing. Folic acid also needs time to build up in your system, as it's not effective if you already are pregnant and then start taking prenatals. I've always heard that takes 3 months.

Awesome! Ya I have bottle of them sitting at home but I felt silly taking when I wasn't pregnant. But then I started thinking about how the vitamins are designed specially to help with women's health down there and figured that they might actually be beneficial. Just wanted someone else's opinion.

Thank you all for your answers. I guess I will start taking my prenatals!

I dont want to scare you but I was (until recently) taking my usual multi-vit only to read on the back "dont take if pregnant or likely to become pregnant" frightened the Cr@p out of me so I chucked them out and got some Sanatagen Mother to Be vitamins.
Definitely take extra Folic acid if not a whole "pregnancy vitamin"
