I think everyone is different - some women ovulate every month, some women don't (and get annovulatory periods (sp?) where they don't ovulate), some women get strong signs of ovulation (such as mittelschmerzen - ovulation pains, EWCM (egg white cervical mucus) and so on) and some don't. You can use ovulation predictor kits to help predict ovulation (especially useful if you have a regular cycle - a bit more expensive if you don't).
I used opks when I was ttc my son and I found that I ovulate around day 15/16 of the month. I also get ovulation pains either on one side or the other round about ovulation time.
I definatly don't ovulate every month but I really didn't know this until I started coming here.. which sounds crazy since I've not been having periods but I really thought you always did regardless.. Oh well!!
