Thoughts on pre-TTC dr visits?

I've read in a number of places that it's a good idea to see your care provider before TTC, just to make sure that all systems are go, so to speak. Since my TTC date might be coming up in the next few months, I've been thinking of this. As far as I know, I'm in excellent health. I have no chronic health issues. Should I get a check-up anyway? I know I'll need to make sure I'm up to date on my vaccines, but I can get that done through my university health center without having a real appointment.

What are your thoughts on this? Is it really important for someone who's healthy to have a pre-TTC visit? Health care costs are so over-inflated where I live, and I hate the idea of charging my insurance for tons of blood tests that I don't actually need.

I went to visit my doctor a few weeks ago as I had heard that it was best to have a health check before trying for a baby. My doctor just advised to start taking FA asap, have a blood test to check that I am still immune to rubella and to have a smear test if I hadn't had one in the last 2 years.
Hope this helps.

Yes, that's helpful, thanks. I'm pretty sure my health center can do the blood titers. And I can definitely handle the FA on my own.

My doctor did a test to see if i was immune to Rubella and they also did a full blood count (but they didn't tell me that till after)
Apart from that they said to take Folic Acid and to cut out any bad habits i had (but i don't smoke or drink so i was okay on that one!)

I had a physical done, because well it had been a year since my last one at that's what the doctor recommended last fall. It works out well that we're trying to conceive in 6 months; so the doc did some blood work, and we're investigating some possible health issues, and I got my last prescription for birth control. yay!

Granted, health care is fantastic where I am, I haven't had to pay a dime for any testing.

I told my doctor that I was going to TTC when I went for my last pill prescription. He organised a blood test to see if I was still immune to Rubella and advised about taking folic acid. He also said not to worry about when I'm ovulating, just BD lots and also said to start trying straight after coming off the pill as some women can be more fertile then.

I mentioned it at my last physical about a month ago, and my doctor was basically just like great, go for it hehe. buuut i also have regular, yearly physicals and pap smears, so i'm not sure what else there would be for him to check. hadn't heard about getting checked for rubella immunity though, interesting.

oh and also i need to get it in gear to get a dental checkup!
