Getting off Depo.

Hey everyone. I'm WTT, probably another 2 years or so, as I'm working on a career change and hopefully everything works out with my partner moving back up here and us getting married and all that stuff. Not necessary detail to get into, but 2-3 years is my mark to hopefully be financially secure to start trying.

Anyway, I've been on Depo for the last six months. I did not go back for my third shot because I started freaking from some of the stories I've read online laely. Now, several years ago, when I was about 19-20, I was on depo for nearly 2 years. I stopped it because at the time I was getting it from a clinic that I no longer had access to, and it wasn't too pertinent to me since I wasn't in a long term relationship any longer where I might be having unprotected sex. My periods returned after about 3 months and were very regular (just as they were prior to depo) and remained that way for the next 4-5 years until I restarted Depo in August of 2010. I never tracked any ovulation during this period, however, since I wasn't trying to get pregnant, in fact, most of my youth I have been pretty ignorant to the significance of my menstrual cycle. All I can say is that my periods returned and they were regular. My periods were always in a 28 day cycle, but short (3-4 days) and usually very heavy the first 2 days.

I mainly opted for Depo this time around because my previous experience had been positive, and especially so because my OBGYN was concerned about giving me estrogen based birth control because I'm an ex-smoker (only quit a year ago), and because I was a few months out of surgery (lap band) and she didn't want to risk the blood clotting that can occur with estrogen.

Anyway, I'm aware I probably shouldn't freak, but I am. I'm older now (26) and I've probably spooked myself after reading a lot of depo horror stories. I'm curious if anyone can relate to my experience and symptoms. I was supposed to get my third shot on 2/22/11, I'm almost a month out, and I'm wondering how long it will take my hormones to regulate and AF return, and especially my body to ovulate. I would at least like to track it so I can breathe a sigh of relief, even if I'm not TTC at this moment.

I know it can take nearly 2 years for depo to leave the body, but this wasn't the case for me with my first experience, I am curious if it will be the same this time around.

I've also begun to take vitex with the hopes of aiding my body during this process. Not sure if this is a good idea for me personally, but I've read it helps a lot of women. I've also started taking milk thistle to clean my liver, and folic acid which is supposedly essential for reproductive health. I take many other unrelated supplements including krill oil, evening primrose, reservatrol, CLA, and a daily multivitamin.

Any helpful stories or ideas about post-depo experiences, and any that can relate to my situation, would be great. Thanks

I'm afraid I've never had it, it's been the one thing I've steered clear of cos it's the longest to conceive afterward. The official thing is between 6 and 18 months to be able to conceive afterward, but it took my mate a month to get pregnant wiht her first two, then she had depo, took her 3 1/2 years to conceive her third. even once her periods settled down she wasn't ovulating properly or something.

Thats an extreme case though, but I'd defo advise using somthing else. Coming off depo about12-18 months before you want to ttc?

why not get the implant or use the mini-pill if you are concerned about oestrogen? x
