Distraught

Today I had to go for an mri because of my prolactin being too high. They think I might have a tumor on my pituitary gland. Anyway it was a disaster. You take off your bra and trousers and then they lay you down on this kind of bed thing and put dye in your arm. The next thing they do is put a type of cage thing over your head and then you get shoved into this little tunnel type thing. Anyway I was ok for about 30 seconds and then the panic started. I had the worst panic attack since years inside in it and thought I would get diarrhoea. I pressed the button and told them to get me the hell out of there. They did and then they offered me something to calm me down but I couldn't do it. I was such a wuss. The problem is that I have to have it done because it's all part of the examinations to do with my missing period. What am I going to do? The thoughts of doing it again makes me sick to my stomach.

Oh hun, I'm so sorry you've had this. Sounds awful. Can they give you a sedative or anything to calm you before you go in as you've had such an extreme reaction? Another thing that might be worth investigating is hypnotherapy- I understand it can help even after just one session- all about giving you a way to cope with the stress...

I used to suffer from panic attacks and they're the worst things. Mine weren't too too bad, but still ghastly. I was able to cope with them through focused breathing, but I'm sure you know all about that sort of thing...

Hope you're ok now hun. xxx

I dunno if you have it in Germany but here in the us, they have a second option for mri's that i believe is called an open mri, and its for people that get claustrophobic or have panic attacks in small spaces. If they don't have that option id go for ^wss and ask if they have anything to help calm your nerves.

Ive had 3 mri scans, they are quite possibly the most horrible things ever! Ive had 2 where ive had to go right in and been stuck inside then one brain scan with the cage, after having the other 2 before hand though the brain scan was fine

Thanks gals. The worst part was the feeling of cramping in my stomach and the fear that my bowels would open and that I would pooh everywhere. They said that they can give me something to calm me down the next time. I hope it's a full anesthetic

Defo take the drugs! Lol! You need to be as calm as possible, and let the Drs do what they need. Once they have taken the tests, you can find out what the next stage is! Good luck next time though, you CAN do it!

The thing is I can't imagine that any drugs will calm me enough so that I don't have a panic attack in this thing again. It was awful, like being buried alive. I know I will have to go through it but at this point in time don't know when I will get the courage too.
