prenatal vitamins and the pill

this is probably a silly question but i was just wondering - is it worth starting taking prenatal vits whilst you're still on the pill? DH and i are hopefully going to start tcc in march/april next year and i was thinking of starting to take vits/supplements around christmas time this year but not actually coming off the pill until jan/feb. just wondered if you wise ladies could offer me any advice?

Hi Beany2,
I have started prenat vits now and I am on the pill. H2B and I are going to start trying in July after our honeymoon, not sure how long you need before they make a difference but I think it is about 3 months ?? So the longer the time you are on them the better I think

Good luckxx

Prenatals aren't supposed to be women's standard vitamins, according to the Mayo Clinic. They also say you should start them 3 months before TTC, though, and certainly be on them any time you aren't using reliable bc. Hope that helps!

I have been taking prenatals since January, and I am on the pill. We are not ttc until September/Octoberish.

The reason to take them while still on BC is that your body takes time to become saturated with the vitamins and minerals from multivatmins.
Let's say you're defecient in a particular vitamin, it can take months to conteract that deficiency with supplements.
It's about getting you healthy before you have to worry about two people sharing nutrients.

I also heard you should be off the pill for quite some time before TTC, so maybe go off the pill, wait a month, then start the prenatals.

It doesn't matter if you come of the pill a couple months before or not, it's really a personal preference. The advantage to coming off the pill a couple months is to see if your cycles are regular (this makes dating a pregnancy easier).
There are also studies and research that state that there is an extra "fertile" period right after coming off the pill.

Personally, I'm planning to come off the pill just before TTC.
