Coming off the pill

So wtt till may 2013 and was thinking of coming off the pill in feb, I was just wondering if this is sensible or should I wait till the end of April to come off it? I was hoping I'd get the hormone surge if I come off it a few months before?!

I'm on microgynon 30 btw

We're planning to go off bcp in August, 3 months before ttc in November. Some women do have a surge in fertility immediately after going off bcp, but that isn't guaranteed!

We're going off 3 months before ttc on the advice of my ob/gyn. We're to monitor my cycles because I may need fertility meds to ovulate. Since you're not going to have that issue, it may just be a matter of personal opinion!

Hi Hanie22,
I was on the same pill and came off mine in feb! We're not trying until dec this year. Some people say you can fall in the first month after stopping the pill as you're very fertile but I came off mine as I wanted to know more about my natural cycles. The only downside is in a total selfish way,you don't know when exactly your AF will arrive each month so for holidays and special occasions you run the risk of having our lovely monthly friend with you. Im also taking a multivitamin with folic acid in to build my body up too. There's no harm being on that so if you decide to stay on your pill then you could do something towards getting your body ready and start taking those.
Good luck with your decision. X

I went to the doctors the other day to get my prescription and mentioned that I will be TTC from next year she told me to start taking folic acid now but nothing about when to come off the pill. I suppose I'll just stop in feb like I've planned which still gives me 2 months to regulate hopefully. Thank you for your help.

When I went for my physical last month my doc told me to come off the pill and start charting (we're planning to start TTC in June or July). I'm on the older side, so figuring out if I'm ovulating properly before TTC is important. Even if I didn't have possible age-related fertility issues to worry about I'd stop the pill a few months in advance of TTC. Giving one's body a chance to self-regulate first could cut back on some frustrating months of BFNs.

I think that's a good decision. We are going to try starting June and I stopped mine in February. The first cycle was off but I think now I am starting to regulate. I was driving myself crazy last month so I took an OPK and got a positive on CD 16! I hope that means things are going right. I definitely stopping at least a few months before is best. Gives you time to track your cycle which will help you identify fertile days and also make it easier to pin your due date once you are pregnant! good luck!

We are trying to conceive from this next month and I just took my last pill on Saturday. I think it's a matter of personal choice more than anything. If the possibility of falling pregnant unplanned in advance of when you'd like to start TTC isn't a huge deal (if a condom was to break, for instance), then I don't think it matters too much what you do. For us, I knew the earliest it would be okay for me to get pregnant would be May, so I didn't want to take any chances. My cycles off the pill, however, have always been pretty normal, and we aren't in an incredible rush, so as long as we're pregnant within a year or so that's fine for us. The only thing I'd mention is that hormonal contraception can be effective in 'preventing' or more accurately delaying fertility problems that can pop up, which is why some people do have the fertility surge after they come off but might have more trouble conceiving after a bit of time. But it's a toss up really because you never quite know if that will be you and fertility awareness can be really helpful in finding out if you do have any of those issues. I would say it should be more a matter of whether the extra contraception is important in your life up until the time you start TTC or not. Definitely start on the folic acid, however, it's pretty much never too early to be on it, especially because it's so cheap.
