How will i know?

If my lo is ready to start solids my mw advised me to start my baby on solids at 16 weeks as he's a big baby my ticker is wrong by few days he's 13 weeks 14 on Friday.I've bought spoons n some bowels just to have in when we do start and sometimes I give him his spoon to hold when he's in my lap so the spoon isn't alian to him completely. He tries to lick it n put it in his mouth n gets it in sometimes lol so my question is how do I know when he's ready gonna try plain rice/sunshine orange and then what? How long do I just do rice etc ftm so bit clueless Bout this !

16 weeks is WAY too early.. it doesn't matter how big they are, your HV must be really old school or have her information mixed up They're ready when they can sit well in a high chair without falling over or slumping (we waited til he could sit completely unaided) and they've lost their tongue thrust reflex... at 16 weeks neither of those are possible. The absolute earliest you're suppose to start is 17 weeks but that's mostly for babies with reflux or medical conditions.. the recommended age is now 26 weeks/6 months Personally, we started at almost 27 weeks and skipped the babies cereals and purees and went straight to 'real' food. Try to do some research.. it's def in the babies best interest to start later rather than earlier...

Good luck!

I agree with PP, I think 16 weeks is too early for a baby to be ready. It doesn't matter if he's big or not.

I started Jack just after 5 months, I felt he was ready as he lost his tongue thrust reflex and could sit up with minimal support.

Thanks ladies I'm not in a rush to start him on solids he's happy on his milk he takes 7oz 5 times a day sometimes he would be due the last bottle in the early hours like 1 r 2 am and he wouldn't wake for them at all so I presume he's getting enough if not he wouldn't be long letting me know right?I mean he sleeps through the night and doesn't look for anything in between bottles other than the occasional dody(dummy) I have people ie family oh he will gone on his mash and by by xmas going by the calendar he's not 16 weeks until the 31st!

according to my aptamil box Ireland suggests weaning at 17 wks for FF and 6 months for BF? The generic guideline is 6mo for all. Our LO is a big boy and easily has 5 x 7 oz. We started him at 17 1/2 weeks as he was suffering with reflux but he wasnt ready. he would take the food and no tongue reflux but he didnt enjoy the experience. we stopped and restarted last week and this week he has eaten everything in sight! he loves his food each baby is different and you can try when you feel right after 17 weeks-the will let you know x

That sounds fine to me... Jack was drinking 5 x 8oz bottles before I started weaning him.

You're right, your LO would soon let you know if he was hungry!

Thanks Hun he has his tongue reflex alright and because it's a battle to give him calpol for teething sometimes I give it in a tommee tippee spoon I measure it with a nurofen syringe then put it on d tt spoon n let him lick it off that way akward but works for us if it means him getting pain relief for his gums he hates teetha gel so it's what we have to do for now

Oooh it will get much easier to give him Calpol when he's weaning! He should open his mouth nice and wide for you then! But yeah, good idea to use the tommee tippee spoon. I always find those Calpol spoons an awkward shape.

guidelines in ireland are different. 13 or 14 weeks is early, i would probably wait til about 16 or 17 weeks though.
can you put your lo on hungry milk in the meantime?
dont be in a hurry to start weaning!
and sunshine orange is ok to start with, but its high in maltodextrin, which is a sugar. i would offer apples and pears steamed, or mash potatoe mixed with milk.

dont let family pressure you into weaning early, i find here in ireland people are in such a hurry to wean sooner than 17 weeks and really theres no need. i was told too to give my lo mashed potatoe at 2 months old! no way i said lol.
