BLW v purée- what should I do?

My LO is 21 weeks. We are weaning early because he has reflux and is on the max dosage of his current med and I am not comfortable moving him onto something stronger.

I had hoped to do BLW but as I'm doing this 1 month earlier I'm unsure what to do.

What made you decide to do one or the other?

Why? And any issues doing it early as opposed to recommended 6 months?

We weaned at 4 months because of this, started with purees because of the age, it did really help until we got to 6 months and introduced dairy - she threw everything up. Not sure if its the reflux being made worse with the dairy or an intolerance - we are now awaiting a referral to the hospital (currently cut all dairy out again). You can do a mixed approach as we do- there are pros and cons for both. If you are wanting to stop the reflux I'd spoon feed to ensure something is getting eaten and if that goes well give pieces of bread or fruit etc (fruit is a nightmare for our daughter as well avoiding fruit and dairy are a nightmare).

Keep an eye out for things that make the reflux worse - such as apple or pear or orange. Good luck, hope that sort of helped?! Ps our daughter is now 7 months x

Thanks my LO has cows milk protein intolerance so we too have no dairy (he's breastfed). Makes a massive difference to his reflux!

My lg has just turned 7 months and has servere reflux and cows milk protein allergy so no dairy for us either! I was a bit concerned about stronger meds too but have found that they were a life saver and she got switched to Omeprazole which is just once a day anyway about weaning!
I weaned from 17 weeks and started of with purree's. I know do a mixed of purrees and finger food which works great for us. I find purrees are good as i know she is having a good amount of food, she also loves them and she has finger food, like toast, veg, fruit, raisins etc. I also give her what we are having for dinner. So if we have a roast I put a few pieces of chicken, veg and pots in a bowl and she munches away xx

Because of the age, I would start with purees for a little while before moving on to lumpier foods.

How did you both find out about the intolerance? I found I was never listened to, it seems if I have any dairy she is worse as well (I BF her). If I eat too much chocolate she is also really bad. I just kept being told that some babies are sicky - but she was throwing pretty much everything up and they were stressing about her weight and clearly thought I wasn't feeding her enough! ended up keeping an epic feeding diary. She dropped down from 96th centile to the 25th and hasn't picked up from that. I hope they can shed some light on it when we go to the hospital, I tried Gaviscon but it upset her so much that she made herself more sick - I refused any other meds as it never seemed to bother her, but with dairy she is projectile vomiting! Poor things! x

If you need the baby to actually eat the food I would go with puree. Little goes down in the early days of BLW so you may not find that early weaning would help the reflux. Of course starting with purees does not mean that you have to stick with them, you can introduce some finger foods in another month.
