Lumps and finger foods. Zero interest at 7 months. Is this okay?
Well, she's very nearly 7 months...
Anna loves her food. She'll pack away smooth purées and fromage frais like nobody's business I've started to try to introduce her to small lumps to get her used to textures and, despite being quite good at chewing already, she absolutely HATES it and will point blank refuse to eat it, even if she's really hungry.
Last night I gave her some smooth veg purée that I mixed some finely grated cheese, finely mashed beef and little chunks of broccoli florets into and although she seemed to like the taste, she hated the lumps and just cried whenever it was in her mouth and refused to swallow it.
I tried again tonight with a mild pasta and veg Hipp jar and the same thing happened, yet when I gave her some smooth veg purée instead she wolfed it down.
She also has no interest in finger foods and feeding herself. I've tried her toast (lightly buttered, with Marmite, with veg and fruit purées on but she won't touch it), pieces of fruit (apple slices, banana chunks, strawberries (she LOVES fruit puréed and can't get enough), broccoli florets etc. She won't even hold it, let alone put it to her mouth and only wants to be spoon fed. She's started sometimes wanting to grab the spoon while I feed her, which I let her do, and she can put it to her mouth so I know she knows that's how it works. She prefers to grab the food off with her free hand and smear it everywhere instead of eating it
Is it okay that she doesn't seem at all ready for these stages yet? Everywhere I read it says by now she should be learning to feed herself, getting used to different flavours and lumps and having finger foods but she just gets confused and upset and I have to spoon feed her all the time
I should add, I leave lumps in her banana mash and it's the only lumps she will entertain because she's so nutso about banana. I'm making them bigger each time and it doesn't seem to bother her but she still won't have any other lumpy foods.
Our LO has no interest in finger foods either. I have started making her purées a teeny bit less smooth over the last few days and she seems okay with it. I suggest to keep offering Anna smooth purées for now and putting finger foods in front of her to explore. Our LOs will get there eventually.
I had a similar issue when LO was younger, which has completely resolved now at 8 months. I think part of what helped was offering her things I was eating -- if we are having pasta she gets a few of the steamed carrots and wolfs them down, ESPECIALLY if they come from Daddy's plate! Earlier on she hated lumps and would purposefully gag and spit them out if she got fed any. She's still not so sure about being spoon fed lumps but finger foods have her seal of approval 100%!
