How much food? Portion size questions, please help!

Well, Harry was 6 months old yesterday so we are now weaning him

He's had some jars of food (my mum is coming over tomorrow and I will use the time to make a load of stuff myslef) but I just don't know how much to give him

Cos this is all new to him I have been giving him half a jar of the stage 1 organix/hipp organic purees. I have also given him some finger foods.

He started the day with a breastfeed.

He had half a jar of a fruit breakfast meal and a rusk (would have taken more if I let him) and a brestfeed.

He had half a jar of mixed veg and juice and some banana at dinner followed by a breastfeed. Again I limited him to half a jar,

He had half a jar of a veg/meat puree and then half a jar of a pudding puree and some juice for tea and a breastfeed, I again limited the portion sizes and he would have taken more if I let him.

He then had a breastfeed before bed.

The thing is, everyone I have spoken to (HVs, other mums, breastfeeding peer support worker) all say he won't have more than a few spoons at a time and will let me know hes full but he seems to want to take LOADS! I don't want to over feed him but I don't want to starve him either!

How much should I be giving him?
Should I be concerned about him taking whatever is offered?
He has a breastfeed after each meal (about 10/15 mins after) each meal.
He doesn't complain when I take food away but would have more if offered it!

Thanks in advance for any replies.

x

Thats a huge amount - that is what folk will say as they are assuming you have started weaning at 6 months - am guessing you started a little earlier so Harry has taken well to it - good!!

I read recently that from 7-9 months to aim for 75-100g size serving. I think half of a stage 1 jar is about 50/60g so you are doing great!

As long as he is still taking his milk then its great.

Bless him, he likes his food. If he's ok with it & I dont think it's much. I dont have a big eater so I cant really comment on quantities. But when I give Omar sth he really likes, like pasta for example he doesnt stop openning his mouth, so I try to limit the quantity to 2-3 tbsps which is what he usually have for lunch. We properly weaned at 6.5 mnths & we went for real food. Jars usually r not so filling esp fruits & veggie ones. I think once u start intorucing real food he will start taking less.

We started at 24 weeks one meal for 1 week, 2 meals at 25 weeks and now he's 26 weeks we are doing 3 meals. He has really taken to it which is why I am sad about it!

Thanks for the advice on portion size! I think he will just like his food, have "eyes bigger than his belly" and won't know when to stop (like his mummy and daddy)!

I feel I should add that 90% of food offered as finger food comes back out and about 25% of pureed food ends up on his face, hands, highchair and bib!

I dont think he is eating too much, babies wil let you know. My only concern is the juice, it is just empty calories and sugar. If her needs liquids, what about water or breastmilk in a sippy cup?
