Help! How long is a feed supposed to take??

So I went to see lactation consultant #3 and I showed her how after a few minutes of breastfeeding LO starts to fight me and its over...well she seemed to think that's because LO is full, and that at 6 weeks a breastfeeding session can last only a few minutes...mums of 6 weekers, is this true??

I was told when I left the hospital that a feed should last 20 minutes on each side, but not sure at 6 weeks how long it should last for.

She also told me to stop pumping as it's likely cutting into his milk supply...but if he only stimulates my breasts for a few minutes at a time, is that ok??

I haven't pumped in 2 days and have been putting baby to breast as often as he would let me, I'm really worried about what this has done to my supply...but I guess if I'm not pumping so its impossible to know what my supply is doing.

She also told me to gradually wean the bottle, I'm weaning the bottle a lot faster than what she advised, I only gave 8oz yesterday (from about 20oz by bottle a few days ago) but I'm putting baby to breast way more often than I was before. I was pumping close to his full daily needs before we saw the lactation consultant so I feel like if he can feed effectively there should be enough milk in there for him to need drastically less supplement. I feel like I need to cut down his supplement way faster than how she reccomended if I'm not going to be pumping so he can stimulate me enough..I'm counting wet diapers and in the past 5 hours we've had 3 wet diapers (including the one LO woke with from overnight...)

Is it OK that he feeds for a few minutes only at a time?? I can't tell if when he's done if he's full or just tired

Don't panic, Ellie was the same, she fed longer when she was sleepy but usually a few minutes on one side and she was done, she started doing the short feeds around 6 weeks since then shes always been a short feeder, your milk might be quite fast, mine was but also babys probably got so efficient at breast feeding now. I was worried but her weight gain has been fine, I was told as long as baby has wet nappies and a good weight gain it should be fine talk to your health visitor if you have any worries. x

Just to add: I was told to stop pumping because i was making too much foremilk which is more watery and comes out faster filling her up quicker. You sound like you have plenty of milk, just feed him when hes hungry he might be spacing his feeds out more now so if hes fussing and not taking much he might just not be hungry at that moment in time.

It completely depends on the baby. My son would feed for ages but my daughter never fed for more than about 5 minutes (or occasionally 10) even as a newborn.
