Confused about starting weaning.

Hi all. I was totally unsure whether to go for TW or blw so I got books from the library on blw. It said to start weaning when baby grabs at your food. Evie has started to do this and today I gave her a tiny bit of my banana mushed in my fingers and she took it. I don't want to start her too early and she's still gaining weight from her milk at a good rate but she's really fussy with her bottles. It can take an hour+ per feed. I've tried changing teats etc but it didn't work. I'm concerned if I start weaning too soon she'll be even more awkward with milk.

I started around the same time as Evie is now. My daughter was drinking 30oz a day at about 2months. I'm lucky if I can get 25oz down her at 5months. Every feed is a battle, she's really not that bothered about her milk. 1-2oz & she's had enough. I was on Dr Browns bottles & just moved to Avent & there's no difference.
When I saw the health visitor at 20wks she said to start trying foods now if Daisy is showing interest. She wasn't bothered by her age...in fact she was surprised I hadn't started. She said they like mothers to be weaning by 6mths, not to start then.
You're unlikely to get Evie to take much anyway...you were lucky with the banana...Daisy actually spat sweet potato across the room this morning. Might opt for lighter colours next time.

Wow, it sounds like you had the same milk hassles as me. Its been a nightmare for about two months, she just doesn't seem to want that much. I might wait til dh is off later in week and try baby rice, if she doesn't like ut I can always try again later.

You ladies sound like your having the same problems I am. My LO (finley) has got very fussy with his bottles he screams after a few oz when he doesn't want anymore. I tried giving him rice after his feed at 11 and he loves it. I'm worried to move on to anything else as I'm unsure what to go to and my HV is not interested and just tells me not to wean before 6 months?!

I got the same response from my health visitor when I asked her about it. She said to hold on as long as possible because Evie's still putting weight on at a good rate (5/6oz a week). Trouble is bottles are a nightmare. If you pause the bottle for any reason in the middle (to answer phone etc) she won't take it again. She quite often will take 2oz then stop and I spend the next hour trying to get the rest in then another hour will pass and we start the saga again. She has been slightly better since I bought handles for her bottles to give her some control - you could try that - she really likes it!

Yep...yr life is my life!
This is how ridiculous it gets...I put waybuloos on each time she needs to feed & the distraction of the music & visual effects relaxes her. She then forgets I'm shoving a bottle in & drinks it. When she stops (as its way too much excitement for feeding time) she refuses to take it again. I usually have to wait another 5mins & star all over. For the last month I've also been spending an hr getting her milk down her making it my main goal of the day. What difference does it make....none! She doesn't sleep any longer through the night. In fact she's waking up more now. Is that normal with solids? If yr babies are gaining weight then yr doing good, Daisy is slowly dropping percentile.

She wasn't keen on baby rice but loves the Heinz porridge & banana cereal.
I love how inconsistent HV's are. Mine was so 'have you tried this' 'have you tried that'. I thought 'no, she's only 21wks I was waiting till 6mths!

How do yrs sleep at night?

Oh & just to make feeding time even more enjoyable...she won't be fed on yr lap. Shes got to be lying flat or in her bouncer seat. Try any other position & her mouth clamps shut & she cries. What a diva!!!

Oh no, at least Evie will be cuddled!

She sleeps really well, has sttn since 6 weeks and now does 10/11 hours a night. Quite often though she'll only have 3oz of the last bottle and will still only have 2oz in the morning. And then I spend the next hour trying to get the other 4 in.

I'm really concerned that she'll take less milk when I start weaning which is making me nervous.
